Markets snap two-week winning streak, log worst week in four months

Indian equity markets ended the week on a weak note, snapping a two-week gaining streak and posting their sharpest weekly decline in four months.

BSE-listed companies saw their market capitalisation shrink by more than ₹15 lakh crore during the week, as selling pressure intensified across sectors. The Nifty slipped nearly 2.5% for the week, with all sectoral indices ending in the red, some declining by as much as 6%.

The Nifty Bank index relatively outperformed but still fell 1.5%, while the midcap

index declined in line with the benchmark, shedding over 2.5%.

As many as 35 Nifty stocks ended the week with losses, led by Adani Enterprises, NTPC, Adani Ports and ICICI Bank. In the midcap space, Premier Energies, Waaree, Inox Wind, NBCC, Jindal Stainless and HPCL were among the top laggards.

Markets remained under pressure on Friday as well, logging losses for the fourth straight session. The Sensex fell 605 points to close at 83,576, while the Nifty dropped 194 points to 25,683, slipping below the 25,700 mark. Market breadth stayed firmly negative, with the advance-decline ratio at 1:4. Over 20 Nifty stocks fell more than 1%, with six declining over 2%.

Realty stocks were the worst performers amid continued foreign investor selling, with Godrej Properties leading the losses. Capital market stocks also remained weak, with 360 ONE falling over 4%, while select capital goods names such as Hitachi Energy and CG Power stayed under pressure.

Metal stocks bucked the weak trend, withNalco and Hindustan Zinc gaining, while higher crude prices lifted upstream oil stocks ONGC and Oil India by 1–2%.

IEX slid 8% after CERC did not withdraw the market coupling order, while Manappuram Finance dropped 8% following a Reuters report on RBI concerns over the Bain deal. Vodafone Idea and Indus Towers ended off the day’s highs despite relief on AGR dues.
