What is the story about?
Alkem Laboratories
has launched semaglutide in single-shot pre-filled syringes in India, becoming the first pharmaceutical company in the country to introduce this convenient delivery format. Available in multiple dose strengths, the ready-to-use syringes are priced from ₹350, making the therapy more accessible and affordable for patients.
The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved the pre-filled syringes for the management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, helps improve glycaemic control and supports weight management by mimicking naturally occurring metabolic hormones.
The launch comes at a time when India is witnessing a sharp rise in metabolic disorders, with an estimated 77–82 million adults living with diabetes. As long-term treatment adherence remains a key challenge, offering patients a wider range of delivery options is becoming increasingly important.
Alkem has been actively expanding its semaglutide portfolio to address this growing healthcare need. In March 2026, the company introduced semaglutide injection pens and has also secured regulatory approval for semaglutide vials, which are expected to be launched soon.
Commenting on the launch, Dr. Vikas Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of Alkem Laboratories, said, “Semaglutide has the potential to transform the management of metabolic disorders. The introduction of pre-filled syringes expands patient choice alongside our existing pen format, helping more patients initiate and continue treatment with greater convenience.”
Alkem stated that the launch reinforces its commitment to providing high-quality, affordable healthcare solutions and improving access to advanced therapies for patients across India.
Shares of Alkem Laboratories trading at 1.20% lower at ₹5,250.50 on the NSE.
