What is the story about?
Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) reported a weak operational performance for May 2026, with both coal production and offtake declining sharply from a year earlier, according to provisional data released by the company.
Raw coal production fell 25.5% year-on-year to 2.28 million tonnes (MT) in May from 3.06 MT a year ago. Raw coal offtake declined 15.7% to 2.71 MT from 3.22 MT during the same period. On a cumulative basis for April-May, production was down 33.8% at 4.27 MT, while offtake declined 20.9% to 4.97 MT.
Production of coking coal, BCCL’s key product, dropped 25.8% to 2.13 MT in May, while overburden removal fell 43% year-on-year to 10.17 million cubic metres. Washed coking coal production, however, rose 22.4% to 0.16 MT during the month.
The operational update comes days after the company announced the commencement of commercial operations at its 2 MTPA Bhojudih Coal Washery. The facility is a three-product medium coking coal washery with a raw coal washing capacity of 20 lakh tonnes per annum.
BCCL’s performance mirrors a broader decline in production at parent Coal India Limited, which reported an 11.6% fall in May output to 56.1 MT. However, Coal India’s offtake rose 2.2% to 66.7 MT, marking its highest monthly offtake since August last year.
Coal India recently completed a 2% offer-for-sale that raised over ₹5,000 crore and has set a production target of 815 MT for FY27.
