What is the story about?
Sunil Bharti Mittal and Mukesh Ambani have been named among the founding members of the newly launched AI for Good Global Commission, an initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations' specialised agency for digital technologies.
The two industry stalwarts will serve alongside some of the world's most influential business and technology leaders, including Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, who will co-chair the Commission, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and ArcelorMittal Executive Chairman Lakshmi N. Mittal.
Announced on July 2, the AI for Good Global Commission brings together more than 40 leaders from governments, international organisations, academia and the private sector to help shape the future of artificial intelligence and ensure its benefits are shared globally.
The Commission will be co-chaired by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Marc Benioff, while ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin will serve as Vice-Chair. According to the ITU, the body will focus on expanding access to AI, strengthening trust in the technology and developing practical solutions that support sustainable development.
The initiative comes at a time when AI adoption is accelerating globally, but access to digital infrastructure remains uneven. The ITU estimates that around 2.2 billion people are still offline, underscoring the need for policies that prevent AI from widening existing digital divides.
The Commission builds on the ITU-UNESCO Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development and aims to bring together leaders who build AI technologies, deploy them at scale and shape policy, creating a collaborative platform to address opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence.
The Commission is expected to convene for the first time during the AI for Good Global Summit 2026 in Geneva, scheduled to take place from July 7 to July 10.
