A Singer's Second Calling
Asha Bhosle, a name synonymous with Indian music for over seventy years, harbored a profound love for cooking that led her to establish a successful international
restaurant chain. This venture, born from a deep-seated passion, aimed to bring authentic Indian flavors to a global palate. While her vocal prowess is universally acclaimed, her dedication to the culinary arts and the creation of a brand that reflects her personal taste and family traditions often remains a lesser-known facet of her illustrious career. The restaurants were designed to be a testament to her belief that cooking, much like singing, should be an act of love, shared with joy and dedication.
Global Flavors, Family Roots
The culinary journey of Asha Bhosle took flight in 2002 with the inauguration of her restaurant chain, Asha's, in Dubai. This initial step marked the beginning of a significant international expansion, with the brand eventually gracing cities like London, Manchester, Birmingham, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain. At its peak, the chain encompassed approximately ten establishments worldwide, each offering a menu curated with dishes that held personal significance for Asha Tai herself. The core philosophy behind Asha's was to serve traditional Indian cuisine, emphasizing heirloom recipes and the very spices she favored, ensuring an authentic taste experience that resonated with her own culinary heritage and preferences.
The Heart of the Kitchen
Asha Bhosle often spoke of the intrinsic connection she felt between her singing and her cooking, describing both as deeply heartfelt endeavors. In interviews, she articulated that cooking, like music, originates from the soul and is meant to be created and shared with love. This sentiment was the driving force behind her culinary ventures, imbuing each dish with a personal touch. The meticulous selection of spices, guided by her heirloom recipes, and the focus on dishes she personally cherished, underscored her dedication to authenticity. Her passion was so profound that she once humorously likened the joy of wearing a chef's coat to adorning a favorite dress, highlighting the immense pleasure she derived from her time in the kitchen.
Signature Dishes Celebrated
Within Bollywood circles and among her vast admirers, Asha Bhosle's culinary skills were as legendary as her singing. Her Peshawari-style 'maa ki daal' was a dish she often highlighted, having learned its preparation from individuals in Peshawar, asserting its unique and unmatched quality. Beyond this iconic lentil dish, her repertoire included highly acclaimed Prawn chops, flavorful Baingan Bharta, and expertly prepared Kebabs. The singer recalled hosting frequent gatherings, often for 60 to 70 people, where she would prepare food in enormous vessels, a testament to her generous spirit and the widespread popularity of her cooking. Even her sister, the equally celebrated Lata Mangeshkar, was known to be a devoted fan, particularly of Asha's shammi kebabs.
A Son's Culinary Dream
The genesis of Asha Bhosle's foray into the restaurant business can be traced back to her son, Anand Bhosle. Anand, a great admirer of his mother's cooking, was reportedly inspired by her culinary talents and expressed a desire to establish a restaurant in her name. This heartfelt suggestion from her son eventually blossomed into the globally recognized Asha's restaurant chain. Even while maintaining a demanding schedule at the forefront of the music industry, Asha Tai never diminished her passion for cooking, demonstrating the deep-seated joy and fulfillment she found in preparing and sharing meals.
