The 2026 Met Gala witnessed a spectacular display of Indian artistry through a custom-designed cape, a testament to the nation's rich textile traditions.
This magnificent piece was not merely an accessory but a canvas, meticulously brought to life over an astonishing 960 hours. The collaborative effort involved a dedicated team of 50 skilled artisans, drawing their expertise from both Delhi and Mumbai. Their combined talents and unwavering commitment were instrumental in transforming a vision into a tangible masterpiece, highlighting the profound dedication required to preserve and showcase heritage crafts in a modern setting. This cape served as a powerful symbol of Indian creativity, demonstrating that traditional techniques can achieve global recognition and admiration.
Embroidered Cityscapes and Artisans
Worn elegantly over a classic bandhgala, the cape was a visual narrative of Mumbai's essence, adorned with a sophisticated palette of white and ivory. Its surface came alive with a medley of intricate embroidery styles, including the delicate dori work, the opulent zardozi, the intricate chikankari, and the lustrous kasab. Beyond the exquisite textile artistry, the cape bore a unique homage to the city itself, featuring iconic landmarks synonymous with Mumbai's cinematic identity. Even more profoundly, it proudly displayed the names of the artisans who poured their skill and passion into its creation. The designer described it as a profound reflection of both the bustling spirit of Mumbai and the collaborative atelier that breathes life into his creative concepts, underscoring the human element behind the grandeur.
