“Imperfect Women” has been renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV, Variety has learned. Season 1 star Kerry Washington will return to lead the second season.
The first season of the show is based on the book of the same name
by Araminta Hall, while Season 2 will be based on an original idea built around Washington’s character. “Imperfect Women” debuted on Apple TV back in March. The first season also starred Elisabeth Moss and Kate Mara. Moss’ Love & Squalor Pictures had originally optioned the book for television.
Annie Weisman served as the writer and showrunner on Season 1. She will return for Season 2 as co-showrunner alongside Justin Hillian. The official logline for Season 2 states, “Eleanor (Washington) returns to her hometown roots in the affluent black enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, only to find that beneath it’s idyllic surface, lie secrets and scandals that threaten to upend everything she thought she knew about her past.”
“We were thrilled to see how deeply these women and their stories resonated with audiences around the world, and I’m so excited to step back into Eleanor’s shoes,” Washington said. “She’s intelligent and strong, but she also finds herself navigating complicated and sometimes messy situations. We at Simpson Street along with our incredible partners at Apple and Love & Squalor Pictures can’t wait to explore a fresh chapter for her and share where this story takes us next.”
Hillian was most recently the co-showrunner on the Showtime series “The Chi.” He has also worked on shows like “Snowfall” at FX and “I’m Dying Up Here,” also for Showtime. He is repped by WME, 3 Arts, and Yorn Levine.
“After a wildly entertaining first season, driven by the performances of Kerry, Lizzie and Kate, we jumped at the opportunity to expand the world of ‘Imperfect Women’ through Kerry’s fan favorite character of Eleanor,” said Matt Cherniss, Apple TV’s head of programming. “Annie and Justin’s thrilling new story felt like an exciting and natural next chapter. We can’t wait for fans to experience it.”
Weisman and Hillian are the creators, co-showrunners, and executive producers on Season 2. Washington executive produces via Simpson Street along with Pilar Savone. Moss and Lindsey McManus executive produce via Love & Squalor. 20th Television and Apple Studios produce.
