Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” delivered a historic theatrical debut in India, dethroning “Avengers: Endgame” to claim the biggest opening frame for a non-Indian film in the country’s box office history.
The superhero
tentpole generated a gross collection of INR72.44 crore ($7.6 million) on its first day, surpassing the previous Hollywood launch benchmark set by “Avengers: Endgame”. The opening frame saw nearly 1 million moviegoers flocking to cinemas on its opening Thursday alone.
Across India’s largest cinema chain, PVR Inox, the film grossed over INR135 crore GBOC ($14.1 million) during its opening weekend, welcoming nearly 3 million moviegoers at an average occupancy of 60%. Nationwide, the film’s four-day extended opening weekend produced a gross collection of INR328.5 crore ($34.4 million) across 17,250 screens. In four days of release, the feature emerged as the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood release of all time in the Indian market, taking direct aim at the all-time gross records currently held by “Avatar: The Way of Water” (INR484.36 crore/$50.8 million) and “Avengers: Endgame” (INR442.3 crore/$46.4 million).
Gautam Dutta, CEO, revenue and operations, PVR Inox Limited, said: “The response to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has been truly outstanding and reflects the enduring appeal of global event cinema on the big screen. What has been particularly encouraging is not just the scale of the opening weekend, but the breadth of audience participation across markets. We have seen exceptional demand from metros as well as Tier II and Tier III cities, with advance bookings, healthy walk-ins and repeat viewership contributing to sustained momentum throughout the weekend.”
Linguistic versatility and broad penetration across India’s regional circuits drove the record gross numbers, with strong demand spanning major metropolitan centers as well as Tier II and Tier III cities. The original English-language version led theatrical collections with a 55% occupancy rate across nearly 8,000 shows. The Hindi-language dubbed edition generated an extraordinary 95% occupancy across some 7,000 shows, demonstrating the character’s reach into regional markets. Southern regional language dubs in Telugu and Tamil added further momentum across key circuits.
Metropolitan centers recorded unprecedented demand, with Bengaluru leading all cities by contributing 23% of tracked top-city grosses, followed by Hyderabad at 17%, Mumbai at 15%, and Delhi at 14%. Strong family turnout, repeat viewership, and high occupancies across premium large formats set a solid foundation for sustained theatrical momentum as the film aims to challenge the all-time lifetime gross milestone for Hollywood releases in India.
