Daniel Webber (“Billy the Kid,” “11.22.63,” “The Dirt”), Dermot Mulroney (“Anyone But You,” “The Hunting Wives”) and Katheryn Winnick (“Vikings,” “Big Sky,” “The Marksman”) are leading the cast of psychological horror-thriller
“Compound 9.”
The film — now shooting in Miami — is being directed by Rodrigo H. Vila (“The Letter”) and is inspired by William Peter Blatty’s 1980 cult film “The Ninth Configuration,” for which “The Exorcist” author won the Golden Globe for best screenplay. It was written by Vila, Andy Weiss (“White Boy Rick”) and Ari Schlossberg (“Hide and Seek”).
Set in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, “Compound 9” follows a group of Marine veterans suffering from severe psychological trauma who are confined inside a remote government facility.
Webber stars as military psychiatrist Dr. Mark Connors, who arrives to evaluate the patients, only for his investigation to draw him into an increasingly disturbing experiment that blurs the boundaries between trauma and madness. Mulroney plays Col. Dr. Morton Phillips, the austere psychiatrist who runs Compound 9 and its experimental treatment program, while Winnick stars as Riley, a guarded nurse with a troubled past and a complicated connection to the compound. Casting was undertaken by Cassandra Han, whose credits include “The Weight,” “The Physician II” and “Samia.”
“Adapting Blatty was about engaging with his ideas and then pushing them somewhere new” said Vila. “What we’ve written, and what I’m shooting now, takes you a hundred and fifty meters underground and then keeps pulling the floor away — every answer turns out to be a better-disguised question. By the end, the only thing you can be sure of is that you were wrong about the building.”
Added Webber: “I couldn’t ask for a more exciting challenge. To have the chance to fully immerse myself in a character like this, within Rodrigo’s vision and with the unmistakable spirit of Blatty running through the film – it’s a dream.”
“Compound 9” is produced by Lía Rodríguez (“Four Seasons in Havana”,”Escobar: Paradise Lost”) and Pilar de Posadas (“The Night Without Me”) through Unfolding Content, and executive produced by Colette Aguilar (“Marlowe”), Dalila Zaritzky, and Rodrigo H. Vila.
“From the beginning, we saw an opportunity to take the extraordinary ideas at the heart of Blatty’s work and build something bold and cinematic around them,” said producers Rodríguez and de Posadas. “Rodrigo has created a world that is psychologically unsettling but also deeply human, and assembling this cast has allowed us to give those ideas the scale and complexity they deserve.”
Moonrise Media is handling worldwide distribution and will unveil the film’s first footage to international buyers at AFM in Los Angeles this November.
Webber will next be seen in Ruben Östlund’s “The Entertainment System Is Down,” alongside Keanu Reeves and Kirsten Dunst. He can currently be seen in Netflix’s “War Machine” with Alan Ritchson and Dennis Quaid, and recently starred opposite Tom Blyth in MGM+’s “Billy the Kid.”
Winnick is widely recognized for her portrayal of Lagertha in the Emmy-winning series “Vikings.” She went on to star in David E. Kelley’s ABC series “Big Sky” and starred in and produced Sean Penn’s “Flag Day,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. She recently wrapped “My New Friend Jim” alongside Rob Lowe.
Mulroney will be returning as Jed Banks in Season 2 of Netflix’s “The Hunting Wives,” opposite Malin Akerman and and Brittany Snow. He will also star alongside John Travolta and Mandy Patinkin in Roland Joffé’s historical crime thriller “November 1963” and currently stars in Art Camacho’s action thriller “Ruthless.” It was recently announced that he will return as Everett Stone for Searchlight’s “The Families Stone.”
