A documentary feature about Jessica Simpson has proved to be irresistible to Netflix, who’ve snapped up the project, Variety has learned.
Directed by “Robbie Williams” helmer Joe Pearlman, the feature doc will give fans
a deeper look into Simpson’s life and career.
The singer and entrepreneur first came to public attention in the same era as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore. She has since sold more than 20 million records, and fronted one of the earliest celebrity reality series with MTV’s “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica,” which chronicled her marriage (and its discontents) to 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey, and ran for three seasons from 2003 through 2005. She then launched a billion-dollar fashion brand and been a New York Times bestselling author with her 2020 memoir “Open Book.”
Last year, after a 15-year hiatus, Simpson returned to making original music with the EP releases “Nashville Canyon: Part 1 & Part 2,” a collection of personal songs that earned her solid reviews. She also guest starred on Kim Kardashian and Glenn Close-fronted legal drama “All’s Fair,” in which she played the wife of a rock star hellbent on revenge against both her plastic surgeon and her cheating ex.
Pearlman is a BAFTA, Emmy and Grammy-nominted documentary maker behind hits including “Robbie Williams” (Netflix), “Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now,” (Netflix) and “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts” (HBO Max).
Earlier this month he released “Mourinho,” a three-part documentary about former Chelsea soccer manager José Mourinho for Netflix.
Van Toffler, who oversaw “Newlyweds” as the head of MTV Networks, is a producer on the doc. Toffler’s company Gunpowder & Sky is producing the doc, with Barry Barclay, Floris Bauer, Joanna Zwickel, Joe Pearlman and Jonathan Silberberg exec producing.
