“When I was a little kid, I wanted to get bit by a radioactive hillbilly so that I’d become Forrest Gump one day,” says Whitmer Thomas in the trailer for his upcoming HBO comedy special “Terminal Crew of Dudes,” an hour
filled with original songs, home videos and heartfelt memories.
Joined by his bandmates Jeremy Ritchie, Clay Tatum, Budd Diaz and brother Johnny McCann, the Alabama-born comic chronicles his chaotic adolescence, from skateboarding tales to ruining a Benihana birthday party. The special debuts on HBO on Aug. 14 at 9 p.m.
“The first time I ever got condoms, when I was 15 years old, I bought a 48 pack,” Thomas jokes in the trailer. “Do you know how depressing it is, the day you graduate high school, to throw away 47 condoms? It don’t feel good!”
“Thank you to the folks at HBO for giving me another special and all of my friends for being a part of it,” Thomas said in a statement. “I tried very hard making this thing. I hope you like it. If you don’t like it, please keep it to yourself.”
Thomas co-directed the special with Clay Tatum, and the two executive produce alongside Tim Robinson, Matthew Vaughan, Josh Kessler, Olivia Gerke, and Ramy Katrib. Moses Goldfarb is the director of photography.
Nina Rosenstein, HBO’s executive vice president of late-night and specials programming, added: “Whitmer has a remarkable ability to transform his own personal experiences into stories that are hilarious, heartfelt and universally relatable. His second stand-up special is a moving celebration of friendship, family and the beautiful chaos of growing up, and we’re so excited to welcome him back to HBO for another collaboration.”
“Terminal Crew of Dudes” marks Thomas’ second special for HBO; his first, “The Golden One,” was produced by Bo Burnham and A24. In addition to his stand-up and music career, he has also acted in films including “Weapons” and “Friendship.”
