Amazon Music has partnered with Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams for a new episode of its docu-performance series “Songline” — and Variety has an exclusive preview of the song “Broke My Heart.”
In the
episode, recorded at the historic Church Studios in North London, Abrams revisits songs from her recent hit album, “Daughter from Hell,” through performances and candid conversations with longtime collaborator Aaron Dessner about the stories behind the music and their six-year creative partnership. The full “Songline” docu-performance film premieres on September 10.
“Songline” is a series dedicated to the craft of songwriting and invites artists to reimagine their music in a stripped-down, intimate setting. Each performance is intercut with in-depth interviews with the artist, giving fans a look behind the songwriting process. Recent “Songline” episodes have included Billie Eilish, Laufey, A$AP Rocky, Maren Morris, Reneé Rapp, Ed Sheeran, and more.
“‘Songline’ gave me the chance to sit with these songs in a completely different way,” Abrams says. “When you strip everything back, you remember why you wrote them in the first place. It was really just me and my band in a room together, letting the songs breathe. There’s something scary and beautiful about that kind of intimacy.”
Dessner adds, “It’s incredibly real and vulnerable and authentic — there’s nothing contrived about it. It’s the humanity in her writing. She gives voice to things. It’s very cathartic for people to listen to, and I think it’s why she’s connected so much with her fans, because it’s so personal and so intimate. The best work we’ve done is pushing ourselves to be more ambitious and go deeper.”
