“Sleepless Nights 2,” the follow-up to the 2003 relationship drama that became a landmark of contemporary Egyptian cinema, is targeting an April or May 2027 shoot, Variety has exclusively learned. While the original
unfolded over a longer period, the sequel will compress its story into just two days, focusing on Gen Z relationships, all while maintaining ties to characters from the original.
Speaking to Variety at the El Gouna Film Festival, original screenwriter Tamer Habib, director Karim El Shenawy (“The Tale of Daye’s Family,” “The Gentlemen”) and Cairo Films CEO and producer Wesam Seif Elislam revealed new details about the sequel, which is being produced through a partnership between Cairo Films and Al Arabia Cinema International.
While the 2003 film, starring Egyptian cinema veteran and El Gouna honoree Mona Zaki alongside a star-studded cast, centered on four young couples navigating marriage, infidelity, friendship and emotional dissatisfaction, the sequel shifts its focus to a younger group confronting relationships more than two decades later. “The script is related to the original characters, but with a new generation,” Seif Elislam tells Variety, teasing that audiences will see “some of the characters from part one.”
No casting announcements have yet been made, and the team was tight-lipped on whether any members of the original cast will return.
Habib recently completed the first draft of the screenplay, with work on the second now underway. Filming will take place in Cairo and other locations across Egypt that have yet to be announced. Al Arabia Cinema International, which Seif Elislam explains holds the “Sleepless Nights” IP, will distribute the film.
For Habib, who recalls repeatedly rejecting suggestions of a sequel over the past 23 years, the reason to return emerged from how dramatically the landscape around marriage and relationships in Egypt has changed since the original.
“During the 23 years, there was always, always the offer or someone asking me, ‘Why don’t you make a second part?’ And my answer was always ‘no,’ because I didn’t intend to do a second part.” He had no interest in making a sequel simply to capitalize on the original film’s success.
After agreeing to revisit the film, Habib spent roughly eight months asking himself what justified calling it “Sleepless Nights 2.”
“Life is getting tougher,” he explains. “So this was the reason I chose ‘yes.’ I’ll talk about those marital problems now, after 23, 24 years.”
Habib points to divorce, ghosting, social media and Egypt’s changing class dynamics as part of a vastly different landscape for the new generation.
“I think it’s a story for Gen Z,” he adds. To better understand that audience, Habib and the team screened the original film for people around the same age as the sequel’s characters, then held a Q&A about their perspectives on relationships. “They showed me the way,” he recalls.
“Being approached by Al Arabia Cinema International CEO and chairperson Essad Younis and strategic advisor Omar Alkhawaja about a partnership was like a dream,” Seif Elislam recalls.
When it came to finding a director, he suggested El Shenawy, looking for a filmmaker with his own vision who could also keep the project in “safe hands.”
El Shenawy, meanwhile, remembers seeing the original as a university student and being struck by a film he considered markedly different from Egyptian cinema around it, particularly in its depiction of complicated emotions and relationships.
“I was heavily advised not to do it, not to put myself in the comparison,” he recalls of taking on the sequel. “People were telling me, ‘You’re in a good position in your career. Why would you risk this?’” But, he adds, “If I’m driven by fear, not only will I not do this film, but I will miss a lot of great opportunities like this one as well.”
According to El Shenawy, the new film will retain elements of the original’s structure and narrative approach, while grounding its dialogue, conflicts and characters firmly in the present. The story unfolds over just two days, allowing him to “dig deeper in a more concentrated timeline.”
For Seif Elislam, the enduring reputation of the original raises the stakes for the sequel. “ ‘Sleepless Nights’ was one of the films that made an effect on the cinema industry,” he reflects. “It changed the narrative of the movies. I’m glad to be transferred from the audience chair to the producer chair.”
