Bruno Dumont’s “Red Rocks,” which world premiered earlier this year in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, has been acquired by KimStim for North America.
The U.S. distributor plans to release the French filmmaker’s coming-of-age
drama theatrically in North America in 2027, followed by digital and home entertainment.
Set on the French Riviera, “Red Rocks” follows two rival groups of children who spend their summer competing in a dangerous game of cliff jumping. At the center of the story is Géo, a five-year-old boy discovering friendship, rivalry and the first stirrings of romance.
Dumont worked with a cast of non-professional young actors and adopted a documentary-like approach to the film, which was shot against the red cliffs and blue waters of the Mediterranean.
“‘Red Rocks’ is a disarmingly tender and playful coming-of-age film. Dumont’s free-spirited, observational approach gives it a natural charm and an almost documentary immediacy,” said KimStim co-president Ian Stimler. “The spontaneity and fearless energy of the young cast, set against the dazzling Mediterranean landscape, make the film feel alive and genuinely surprising. We’re delighted to bring this luminous new turn in Dumont’s work to North American audiences.”
Stimler negotiated the deal with Jean-Benoit Henry, head of international sales at Luxbox, which is handling worldwide sales.
Following its Cannes premiere, “Red Rocks” was selected for Poland’s New Horizons International Film Festival and is also headed to the San Sebastián Film Festival’s Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section and the New York Film Festival’s Currents program.
Luxbox has already sold the film to Les Films du Losange in France, Nitrato in Portugal, DDDream in China, Twin in Japan, PT Falcon in Indonesia, Ama Films in Greece, MegaCom in the former Yugoslavia and Film Europe in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
“Red Rocks” marks Dumont’s latest film following “The Empire,” which won the Silver Bear Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. His credits include “The Life of Jesus,” “Humanity,” “Flanders,” “Camille Claudel 1915,” “Li’l Quinquin,” “Slack Bay” and “France.” Both “Humanity” and “Flanders” won the Grand Prix at Cannes.
Written and directed by Dumont, “Red Rocks” stars Kaylon Lancel, Kelsie Verdeilles, Louise Podolski, Mohamed Coly, Alessandro Piquera and Meryl Pires.
Joaquim Sapinho, Marta Alves and Fiorella Moretti produced the film through Rosa Filmes, with Luxbox, Nightswim, Andergraun Films, Tessalit Productions, Pulpa Films, Sula Films and Denapa co-producing.
