Michelle Dockery will return to the stage for the first time in seven years to lead the world premiere of Ava Pickett’s new play “Bloodsport: After Helen of Troy” at Stratford East.

Crawley in “Downton Abbey,” will star as Helen opposite Laura Aikman as Cee, marking Aikman’s stage debut.
“Bloodsport: After Helen of Troy” will run at Stratford East from Sept. 3 to Oct. 10. The staging is the first Lisa Spirling has directed since taking over as Stratford East’s artistic director and co-CEO.
The play centers on Helen’s homecoming following a war waged over her, unfolding on the first uneasy night of peace. Her husband is jubilant at her return, but her friend Cee reacts very differently, and old grievances surface as the true price of Helen’s departure comes into focus.
“Ava is such an extraordinary voice in storytelling right now and I’m delighted to be part of this bold reimagining of Helen’s return from Troy,” Dockery said. “Stratford East’s history of bringing vital and ambitious stories to life makes it the perfect home for this production.”
“From the moment I read Ava’s brilliant script I was desperate to play Cee,” Aikman added. “I think we can deliver something really gripping and I can’t wait to get started.”
“To be given the opportunity to reimagine characters we feel we know is such a privilege and I can’t wait to share this story with audiences,” Pickett said.
The creative team includes set and costume designer Polly Sullivan, lighting designer Zeynep Kepekli, sound designer and composer Nicola T. Chang, movement director Kloé Dean, casting director Juliet Horsley CDG and dramaturg Ed Madden. Further casting has yet to be announced.
Dockery is best known for her Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated turn as Lady Mary Crawley across six seasons of “Downton Abbey” and its subsequent film trilogy, most recently “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.” She will next play former British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman in “The Queen of Fashion.” Her stage credits include “Network” at the National Theatre, for which the production earned an Olivier nomination, as well as “Burnt by the Sun,” “Pygmalion” and “Dying for It.”
Aikman recently appeared in ITV’s “The Lady” and Disney+’s “Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes,” and will next appear in a new series of “Line of Duty” for the BBC. She reprised her role as Sonia in 2024’s “Gavin and Stacey: The Finale,” which drew nearly 20 million U.K. viewers.
Pickett’s debut play, “1536,” is currently running in the West End after transferring from the Almeida Theatre. It was nominated for the 2026 Olivier Award for best new play and won the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Pickett is adapting “1536” for television at the BBC and is co-writing a Joan of Arc feature for Warner Bros. with Baz Luhrmann.
Spirling previously served as chief executive and artistic director of Theatre503 from 2016 to 2025. Her other directing credits include “Vardy v Rooney: The Wagatha Christie Trial” in the West End, which earned an Olivier nomination.
The production is supported by Eleanor Lloyd Productions, Eilene Davidson Productions and Cockayne Grants for the Arts.
