Production has wrapped in Beijing on “VIII: Awakening,” KC Global Media Asia’s fantasy adventure drama reimagining a classic Chinese mythology legend for modern audiences.
The S-grade series, the company’s first original
China production, completed 24 15-minute episodes for its debut season.
The story follows insurance investigator Lu Xian, who awakens a mysterious precognitive power and discovers he is descended from an ancient legendary guardian. He must join forces with seven others to thwart a dangerous plot as an imprisoned clan of dragons threatens its return. The group uncovers betrayal within its own ranks and faces a battle for the fate of the world, ultimately awakening their true powers and restoring peace, though a new threat emerges quietly in the shadows. The series centers on Immortals whose supernatural gifts let them fight evil and protect those in need, combining suspense with fantasy and gentle humor.
The cast is led by emerging actor Zhang Wan Ying (“Glory”) as He Haining, Leo Zhou (“Relying on Favors”) as Dong Fang Shuo and Nick Shan (“Creation of The Gods I: Kingdom of Storms”) as Lu Xian.
Yu Ji, a noted director of internet midform series, directed “VIII: Awakening.” KC Global Media Asia partners Andy Kaplan and George Chien executive produced. Meng Xun, who has worked with directors including John Woo and Wong Kar-Wai, served as production designer.
“KC Global Media Asia is looking forward to being a part of bringing such an exciting project to global audiences,” said Bonnie Wiryani, VP and head of content sales. “Viewers are more and more interested in seeing local and cultural stories developed creatively and ‘VIII: Awakening’ has all the artistry, action, mystery, fantasy and folklore that we believe will resonate widely. There is great potential for the story to grow beyond a single title and develop into a broader universe in the future.”
The production is a partnership between CICC (China Intercontinental Communication Center) and Shanghai Qi’Ai Film & TV Culture Co., Ltd. This marks the first original production in China for KC Global Media Asia, which will also handle its international sales. The deal reinforces the company’s continued efforts to grow its distribution business, build creative production partnerships and deliver a broader range of high-quality stories with international appeal.
