Following many Beach Boys fans and followers expressing concern for Mike Love after seeing footage from the group’s Saturday night show in Cincinnati, John Stamos has stepped in with a statement acknowledging that Love is
in poor health as they are doing these shows and suggesting that his longtime friend’s time on stage may be nearing an end.
“I’ve played with Mike for 41 years. I never imagined how deeply it would affect me to see someone larger than life face something so human and fragile,” Stamos said in his Instagram post, managing expectations on his way to performing with the Beach Boys at a show scheduled for Sunday at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.
“We hope he’ll be doing what he loves for years to come, but we don’t know what the future holds. We have tonight,” Stamos said. The actor-musician added, “The Mike Love we see tonight may not be exactly the Mike we’ve always known. But he’s still every bit the Mike we love.” (Scroll down to read Stamos’ complete statement.)
The Beach Boys had been off the road since July, canceling several months of dates as Love addressed health concerns, with a pledge to take up where they left off. More gigs kept being canceled, one by one, until the group finally resumed action, first with a private performance and then a return to public touring with Saturday’s Cincinnati show. But many were alarmed by what they saw in fan-posted video, with Love appearing much weaker and less engaged than he was even in July’s shows.
The frontman for the group for the last six and a half decades remained seated and largely motionless for the entire show in Ohio, not taking any of the many lead vocals he was still doing when the Beach Boys performed for three nights at the Hollywood Bowl in July. One short clip that quickly circulated on social media showed Stamos urging Love to do some hand gestures from his seat, and the Beach Boys’ mainstay gamely complying, but without much apparent energy, before going back to sitting in place.
The Nashville show is the last one on the Beach Boys’ itinerary until mid-November, when they are scheduled to play in Orlando Nov. 11 and Bristol Nov. 13. After that, they just have one gig publicly announced for 2027, in contrast to the usual robust touring schedule they would usually have announced by this time, leading fans to wonder if they really may be prepared to be winding up Love’s time fronting the group.
Coincidentally, across the country, another Beach Boys mainstay from the beginning, Al Jardine, is doing a concert Sunday night in which guest appearances have been promised by two other historical Beach Boys members, Bruce Johnston (who until a few months ago was still part of Love’s touring unit) and David Marks.
John Stamos’ complete statement from Sunday afternoon:
I’m boarding a plane to Nashville to play with the Beach Boys at the Ryman Auditorium, struggling to put my feelings into words.
My beloved friend, father figure, musical hero and mentor, Mike Love, is facing serious health challenges. We hope he’ll be doing what he loves for years to come, but we don’t know what the future holds. We have tonight.
Mike is a fighter. Despite doctors, family and friends urging him to focus on his health, he insists on being on stage. He says he needs his band, the audience, his friends and drummer surrounding him to lift him up.
I’ve played with Mike for 41 years. I never imagined how deeply it would affect me to see someone larger than life face something so human and fragile.
The Mike Love we see tonight may not be exactly the Mike we’ve always known. But he’s still every bit the Mike we love.
His lyrics, optimism, unforgettable hooks and more than 7,000 concerts have brought joy to generations. What he’s given me personally is immeasurable.
Forty-one years of stages, airplanes, hotel rooms, laughter and moments nobody else saw. He married Caitlin and me. He’s shared experiences with my family, and now my son.
Mike didn’t just give me a place in his band. He gave me a place in his life.
He taught me how to entertain, hold a stage, connect with an audience and make people feel something. I carry those lessons everywhere. He’s made me a better musician, entertainer and man.
This life with Mike and the Beach Boys has become part of my identity. I’ve felt entrusted with being a steward of this extraordinary music, carrying it to new generations.
Tonight, at the Ryman, sharing the stage with Mike, I want to be completely present. Hear every harmony, familiar joke and cheer. Feel that first chord hit and watch age, illness and time disappear. Just a bunch of guys making music together.
Maybe the hardest part of loving someone is becoming so accustomed to the miracle of having them there that you forget it’s a miracle at all.
Tonight, I won’t forget.
I want to cherish every second without feeling those seconds slipping away.
That’s what I’m giving him.
We don’t know what tomorrow brings. But we have tonight.
