Potential Films, one of Australia’s leading independent distributors, has acquired worldwide rights to the newly restored 1976 drama “Caddie,” by Donald Crombie.
Considered a landmark film of Australia’s New Wave, the
film is screening at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon and will be presented at the event’s International Classic Film Market (MIFC) as part of the Re>Birth Programme.
“Caddie” was the first film produced by Anthony Buckley, a key figure of the Australian film revival of the 1970s and a renowned advocate of film preservation. Melbourne-based Potential Films boarded the project in connection with its recent restoration by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), marking the film’s 50th anniversary.
Set in 1925 Sydney, “Caddie” stars Helen Morse (“Picnic at Hanging Rock”) as an abandoned housewife with two small children and no means to support them. Forced to pick up the pieces of her life on the eve of the Great Depression, the reserved Caddie lands a job behind a bustling pub. There she stumbles into a lively world of friendships, local characters and unexpected love affairs. Despite the hostility to women on their own, Caddie begins to build a new life.
The film broke domestic box office records upon its original release and won Morse the Australian Film Institute’s best actress award. Among its many accolades, “Caddie” also received a Special Jury Prize at San Sebastián, where Morse likewise won best actress.
Potential Films describes the work as “a female-centered portrait of working-class survival and independence. Based on a true story, it stands as an early example of the feminist currents running through Australian New Wave cinema — before that language had fully taken shape — and it epitomizes the revival of Australian cinema in the 1970s.”
“A charming love letter to Sydney and its working-class past, ‘Caddie’ takes audiences on an emotional journey through its warmth, resilience and unflinching honesty,” says Tara Marynowsky, head of Curatorial and Creative Connections at the NFSA, who will be on hand at the Lumière Festival to introduce the film.
The NFSA completed the new 4K restoration from a scan of the 35mm original picture negative. Overseen by original award-winning cinematographer Peter James, it “captures the gorgeous color, grain, light and texture of the 1976 film,” the NFSA notes.
The film is set for upcoming theatrical releases in Australia and New Zealand, according to Potential Films’ Nik Lee, who is also attending the MIFC. “We are currently exploring a range of wider distribution opportunities, including television and streaming, with further details to be announced.”
While Potential Films has a long history of distributing restored classic films in Australia and New Zealand, “Caddie” is the first such work the company is representing specifically for international sales, Lee adds.
“Caddie” is one of five recently restored films selected for the special Re>Birth showcase and the festival’s Lumière Classics label. The Re>Birth Programme is aimed at connecting rights holders of classic films with buyers, distributors, programmers, sales agents, film labs and publishers and facilitate new avenues of commercial exploitation.
In addition to such catalogue classics as “Citizen Kane,” “King Kong,” “The Battle of Algiers,” “Le Cercle Rouge” and the “Buster Keaton Collection,” Potential Films’ lineup includes such recent and upcoming releases as “Calle Málaga,” “All of a Sudden,” “Bon Voyage, Marie” and “The Party’s Over!”
