“Obsession” director Curry Barker is not only a fan of “You Can See Everything,” but he’s already reached out to Nathan Fielder about working together.
“I thought it was freakin’ insane and awesome,” Barker told Variety
Thursday night at the Time100 Next Gala at Pier59 Studios . “I didn’t know much about [Elizabeth Holmes’] story going into it. I feel like I missed certain tiny things, but it was three hours long and I wished it was longer. That’s rare, you know?”
When asked about potentially collaborating with Fielder, the “Obsession” director revealed he’s already floated the idea to him: “I told him that. I said, ‘Hey!’ … I just put it out in the water.”
“You Can See Everything” blurs the line between narrative and documentary storytelling and, as Variety’s chief awards editor Clayton Davis puts it, has “turned the movie landscape topsy-turvy.” Much like Barker’s “Obsession,” the film has left the industry re-examining what kinds of movies resonate with Gen Z audiences — and, more importantly, what drives them out to the theaters.
“It felt new, fresh, different,” Barker said of “You Can See Everything.” “You almost can’t even call it a documentary, but it totally is. I’m just a huge fan of what [Fielder] is doing.”
Barker should have plenty more chances to cross paths with Fielder on the awards circuit, as both their films continue to earn recognition alongside some of the year’s most acclaimed films.
“The events are really cool,” Barker said. “I did the Academy Gala and I was just blown away. I mean, every direction you look is someone that you’ve seen your entire life on social media, and you’re like, ‘Holy cow, this person’s here. This person’s here.’ That was a crazy experience.”
But one celebrity encounter in particular left Barker starstruck: Emma Watson.
“I was a huge ‘Harry Potter’ fan growing up, and I saw Emma Watson and I froze,” Barker recalled. “It’s so weird, I’m meeting all of these people that I really look up to, but there’s something different about when it’s someone from your childhood that really means a lot. That changes where you’re like, ‘Oh, woah.’ I was totally weird to her. I was trying to play it cool. But I did not play it cool.”
Barker was honored alongside Raye, Druski,Paapa Essiedu and several other Hollywood rising stars at Time100 Next. The night kicked off with an intimate performance from Raye, who performed a jazzy rendition of “Cry Me a River” and “Happier Times Ahead.” Himesh Patel, Alex Warren and several other nominees made toasts throughout the night, but Ashley Padilla of “Saturday Night Live” fame got the biggest reaction from the crowd.
“It’s hard to give a toast when you believe you should not be here,” the comedian quipped. “I was going to say something like the children when they asked me who or what gives me hope for the future. But I realized I don’t know any. I know my niece and nephew. and one of them called me a bitch last week. I’m not gonna say which… my niece! My nephew’s an angel. But I’m not gonna hang all my hope on those guys!”
Next up for Barker is “Anything But Ghosts,” set for release on May 7, 2027. Seth Rogen, who penned Barker’s Time100 Next profile, already saw the film — and claims that Barker’s sophomore feature is “even better” than “Obsession.”
“I’ve seen Curry’s next film, ‘Anything But Ghosts’ — and for those of you who, like me, are uncomfortable with this amount of talent in a person so young, I have bad news … it’s even better,” Rogen wrote. “And, to add insult to injury, he’s just as good an actor as he is a director.”
