“Good Morning America” anchor Will Reeve has revealed that he was diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier this year.
According to People, the 34-year-old son of “Superman” star Christopher Reeve received the cancer
diagnosis in the spring, which then spread to lymph nodes in his abdomen. Reeve is now cancer-free, as of a check-up on Sept. 8.
Reeve was inspired to share his story with the world by his parents. In 1995, when Will was 2 years old, his father was thrown from a horse and paralyzed from the neck down. He became an advocate for spinal cord injury awareness and research alongside his wife, Dana Reeve, launching the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Christopher died in 2004 at the age of 52, and Dana died two years later from lung cancer at the age of 44. Will paid tribute to his parents alongside his siblings Matthew and Alexandra in the documentary “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” which released in 2024.
“I was raised to share one’s struggles if, in doing so, that might help others,” Reeve told People. “Watching my parents up close take the adversity they faced in their lives and repurpose it into something hopeful left a major impact on my life and how I try to live it.”
Reeve said that he first discovered a lump on one of his testicles in the shower, but “assumed it was nothing or it would go away.” But his wife, Amanda Dubin Reeve, urged him to go to the doctor and get an ultrasound. Cancer was detected and in May, he got the cancerous testicle removed. More testing then revealed that the cancer had spread to lymph nodes in his abdomen. Reeve then underwent a six-hour surgery in June to remove them and began chemotherapy.
“I have felt so loved and supported and rooted for by family, friends and strangers alike for my entire life,” he added. “And that’s a big part of why I wanted to speak about this. I’m going to be fine. But this was a heck of a chapter.”
Though it was difficult, Reeve said the whole experience made him feel closer to his late parents.
“The irony is not lost on me that 20 years after my mom died of lung cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering, there I was in the same building getting treated for cancer,” Reeve said. “I was experiencing life as each of my parents at the same time. Because I was a cancer patient at Memorial Sloan Kettering, I was getting a firsthand experience at what my mother went through. Simultaneously, I was learning more about what it was like to be my dad in the final nine years of his life, where he had my mom and our family taking care of him. And there I was with my wife, who, since the day I met her, has reminded me in so many ways of my mom, now playing the role of wife and caregiver.”
Reeve said he’d often head from “Good Morning America” to the hospital for chemo, and took a few days off after each session to recover. He finished his final round on July 31.
“My colleagues at ABC are like family to me and have been with me every step of the way,” he said. “I’m fortunate that I caught this early. Yes, I had to jump through some flaming hoops to get to the other side, but it could have been much worse had I ignored it or delayed going to the doctor.”
