Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s “La Bola Negra” has become the third highest-grossing Spanish film of all time at Spain’s domestic box office, earning an estimated €36.7 million ($41.0 million) through Nov. 1, according
to Rentrak figures.
Only Emilio Martínez-Lázaro’s blockbuster comedy “Ocho apellidos vascos” (“Spanish Affair,” $61.8 million) and J.A. Bayona’s disaster survival drama “Lo imposible” (“The Impossible,” $47.3 million) have generated more theatrical revenue among Spanish productions.
Distributed by independent outfit Elastica Films, the Federico García Lorca-inspired drama, starring Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close, has sold around 5.4 million tickets, emerging as Spain’s biggest homegrown hit of 2026.
Its success comes amid a sharp recovery for the Spanish theatrical market. Box office revenue surged 40% year-on-year in the first 41 weeks of 2026, reaching €489.4 million ($544.8 million) through Oct. 11, according to figures presented by Rentrak at Valladolid’s Merci independent film market.
That puts Spanish box office revenue 8% above the comparable pre-pandemic average for 2017-2019.
Spain has also outperformed the global market. Through September, its box office was up 35% year-on-year, compared with an 11% increase worldwide.
‘La Bola Negra,’ ‘Torrente for President’ Deliver Major Hits
A significant part of Spain’s surge has come from homegrown movies.
“La Bola Negra,” Santiago Segura’s “Torrente for President” and animated feature “Tadeo Jones and the Magic Lamp” account for roughly 60% of Spanish films’ box office this year. That said, around a dozen domestic productions have also surpassed $1.1 million in theatrical revenue.
“La Bola Negra” has surpassed the lifetime domestic grosses of both “Ocho apellidos catalanes,” (“Spanish Affair 2”) the 2015 sequel to Spain’s biggest homegrown hit, and “Torrente Presidente,” another major box office success of 2026.
“Before its release, ‘La Bola Negra’ had all the ingredients to be a major hit, but there was no way to foresee the scale of its success,” Rentrak Spain general manager David Rodríguez said. “Above all, its directing duo is a recognized brand in its own right, capable of mobilizing audiences and capturing the latest social trends and sensibilities.”
Its ultimate box office potential remains difficult to gauge, Rodríguez added, although possible Goya and Oscar nominations could extend its theatrical run.
A Younger Audience for Spanish Drama
Rentrak’s Cinequest research sheds light on the film’s unusually broad appeal.
Among respondents surveyed about “La Bola Negra,” 39.2% were under 35, compared with 25.1% for dramas overall. Women represented 62.1%.
The film also led Cinequest’s rankings for converting advance audience interest into definite theatrical viewing intention among 55 titles distributed by members of independent distributors association Adicine.
Although Cinequest detected strong interest and viewing intentions before release, the eventual scale of the success exceeded what those indicators could predict.
“It’s brought in many more young people, who are talking about it among themselves. The word of mouth has been tremendous,” said Rentrak client insights manager Joaquín Vegas.
“Regardless of a film’s subject or genre, the secret is finding a good story that audiences can connect with and make their own,” he added.
Vegas also praised Elastica’s promotional campaign, which helped build awareness and interest ahead of the release.
Spain’s Five Highest-Grossing Spanish Films – By Nov. 1, 2026
“Spanish Affair” (2014) — €55.4 million ($61.8 million)
“The Impossible” (2012) — €42.4 million ($47.3 million)
“La Bola Negra” (2026) — €36.7 million ($41.0 million)
“Spanish Affair 2” (2015) — €35.5 million ($39.6 million)
“Torrente for President” (2026) — €28.1 million ($31.4 million)
A Broad-Based Recovery
For Rodríguez, Spain’s recovery has been driven by a more consistent flow of box office hits throughout the year.
“After 2020, one film would take everything and the rest got nothing. Not anymore. The market is broadening,” he said.
Seven films have crossed the $22.3 million mark this year, while more than 50 have grossed over $2.2 million. Weekly box office receipts have regularly exceeded $11.1 million.
Hollywood blockbusters have helped drive the recovery. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” have attracted 5.4 million and five million spectators, respectively, in Spain.
Other major contributors include “Michael,” “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” and “Toy Story 5.”
Despite the improving box office, cinema attendance has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels.
Admissions rose 29% between January and September compared with the same period in 2025, but remained 13% below the 2017-2019 average.
Cinequest suggests that much of the improvement comes from existing moviegoers attending more frequently, rather than from a substantial influx of new spectators.
“It’s not so much that people who didn’t go to the movies have started going, but that those who already went are going more often,” Vegas explained.
“There is life beyond Hollywood: almost 70% of global box office comes from outside North America, and local films are very important,” Rodríguez said.
Independent Distributors Gain Ground
For Rodríguez, the success of “La Bola Negra” also demonstrates the commercial potential of Spain’s independent distribution sector.
“Any independent distributor today is perfectly capable of handling major films and achieving fantastic box office results,” he said.
The improving market has brought substantial gains for members of Adicine, the association representing many of Spain’s leading independent film distributors.
Between January and September 2026, Adicine members generated $63.5 million in box office revenue, a 45% increase over the corresponding period in 2025.
Admissions rose 43% to 8.6 million, despite a 5% reduction in the number of films released.
Their combined box office market share increased from 11.5% to 12.4% over those same nine-month periods — figures that capture only the opening days of “La Bola Negra’s” theatrical run, before most of its remarkable October box office performance.
