Kelly Clarkson has shared her admittedly “controversial” opinion on artificial intelligence, saying she thinks it can do “amazing things” but shouldn’t be able to create anything that competes with humans, particularly
on music charts.
The pop star shared her feelings about the technology during an appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast, saying she “loves AI” but has issues with how it works in the music space.
“I love AI. Controversial, I don’t care,” she said. “Here’s the thing, I love AI. There are very amazing things with AI that I’m obsessed with. But also, and I’m very into it artistically too, I have fun with it just like everybody else does. But when you see AI artists competing on a chart with humans, I have an issue. I think there should be a separate chart.”
Clarkson continued by stating that AI is “welcome to the table,” and that it’s “really cool and creative what we’re going to create with AI musically.” “People who maybe can’t do certain things will be able to do it now and I think it’s a fun field to play in,” she said. “But I don’t think they should be competing with humans. It’s basically like having Olympics and then you’re having robots compete with humans, well who’s going to throw it further? Oh, I wonder. So I’m down with it and I think it’s a very interesting thing and what we’re going to do with it is going to be fun, but I do not think they should be competing.”
She went on to praise how AI is being used beyond music but that there should be limitations to the technology. “Here’s the thing. It’s not going anywhere,” she said. “I think it is interesting and there’s so many amazing scientific things that are happening. I don’t think it’s going anywhere but I think you have to be able to differentiate… We can’t lose human. We can’t lose what that is. But there could be an appetite for both, is what I’m saying.”
