Sacha Baron Cohen is going from Ali G to the West End.
The actor and comedian is set to make his stage debut in the London production of Quentin’s Tarantino’s upcoming production “The Popinjay Cavalier,” Variety can
confirm.
Baron Cohen will reportedly play the title character in the play, described as “swashbuckling comedy.” It will open at an as-yet-unknown West End venue in spring 2027 and marks Tarantino’s first stage production.
“The Popinjay Cavalier” is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Little is know about the plot, although producers have prevously stated that it’ll be set in 1830s Europe and have called it “a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.”
The stage casting comes ahead of Baron Cohen reprising his comedy character Ali G in the Amazon MGM feature “Ali G Who Iz I?,” being released globally in October.
Baron Cohen’s recent film work includes the Netflix comedy feature, “Ladies First,” which was the #1 global movie on Netflix when it debuted earlier this year, along with an appearance in “Balls Up,” which was the #1 global movie on Prime Video when it debuted this year.
He previously won two BAFTA Awards for “Da Ali G Show” and is a three-time Oscar nominee, for writing “Borat” and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” as well as an acting nomination for his role in “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” He is a three-time Golden Globe Award winner for “Borat” and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
