Superhero blockbuster “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has delivered a huge opening at the South Korean box office during the weekend of Jul. 31–Aug. 2.
According to data from KOBIS, the tracking service operated by the Korean
Film Council, the web-slinging sequel generated a colossal $16.9 million from 2,252,930 admissions over the three-day frame across 2,409 screens, capturing an overwhelming 80.63% share of total weekend revenue. Since launching wide on July 29, the tentpole has pulled in a cumulative gross of $25 million from 3,384,147 total admissions. Of this, Imax accounted for $2.4 million, making it the highest grossing Imax opening weekend of all time in the territory.
The arrival of the superhero juggernaut ended the two-week streak of local sci-fi survival thriller “Hope,” which moved to second place. The Na Hong-Jin-directed epic starring Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander brought in $2.4 million from 335,810 admissions over the frame. The film has now accumulated a total of $31 million from 4,110,550 admissions since its July 15 launch.
“Minions & Monsters” finished in third place, adding $434,409 from 65,245 ticket buyers over the weekend frame. The film has raised its total to $5 million from 713,940 admissions.
“Moana” was in fourth place in its fourth weekend of release, collecting $252,794 from 37,122 admissions. The oceanic adventure has reached a total local gross of $7.4 million from 999,949 admissions.
“Toy Story 5” placed fifth, adding $222,465 from 31,874 admissions. The family blockbuster has now amassed a cumulative South Korean gross of $20.9 million from 2,912,210 total admissions since its mid-June debut.
Faith-based animated feature “David” took sixth place, generating $167,794 from 25,013 admissions over the frame, pushing its haul to $1.7 million from 263,378 viewers.
Local animated sequel “Teenieping: Legend of the Whale Heartstone” landed in seventh place ahead of its official release, bringing in $177,482 from 20,986 admissions across preview screenings. Directed by Kim Soo-hoon, the musical fantasy sequel to the 2024 hit animated film follows Princess Romi and her fairy companion Heartsping as they dive into an ocean journey to rescue Queen Velita from deep-sea creatures. Including early previews, the family film has collected $215,104 from 26,494 tickets.
Tomoaki Fujino’s “What Should We Have Done?” debuted in eighth place, pulling in $116,603 from 16,009 admissions over the weekend. The acclaimed documentary captures a 20-year personal chronicle of a family struggling with severe mental illness and social isolation. Since its Jul. 29 premiere, the release has grossed $170,552 from 24,008 viewers.
Local psychological thriller “The Eyes,” directed by Yeom Ji-ho and starring Shin Min-ah and Kim Nam-hee, took ninth place with $55,396 from 7,364 admissions, stretching its overall local cume to $11.1 million from 1,537,378 tickets.
Rounding out the top 10 was the Japanese anime feature “Dream Animals The Movie,” which added $30,263 from 4,719 admissions over its second frame to bring its gross to $262,973 from 41,996 ticket buyers.
The overall market collective gross for the weekend was $20.8 million, making it the biggest weekend of the year, soaring above last week’s $8.2 million.
