Letterboxd, the cinephile social media platform for sharing movie reviews, went down Sunday morning, leaving users locked out of their accounts.
Users who opened the Letterboxd app early Sunday found themselves signed
out of their profiles. Entering account information and trying to sign in causes the app to briefly load before kicking users back to the login page. When trying to sign in via the Letterboxd website, users are given the message, “An error occurred. Please try again later.”
The outage began around 6 a.m. PT on Sunday, with over 1,000 users reporting issues, according to DownDetector. At the time of posting this article, the issues are ongoing.
Letterboxd posted the following statement on Instagram in light of the technical difficulties: “Hang in there. Our team is aware of an outage affecting service and is working to restore access as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience and support.”
As of June, Letterboxd has more than 30 million users worldwide, adding 10 million in 2025 alone. The platform, which operates out of Auckland, New Zealand, skyrocketed in popularity during the COVID pandemic.
A report from Puck in early July stated that Letterboxd, founded in 2011, is in early talks with a number of high-profile buyers. Interested parties allegedly include Netflix, Sony Pictures, Paramount Skydance, private equity firm TPG and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Netflix, Paramount and Sony Pictures declined to comment when the report went live. Reps for TPG didn’t respond to requests for comment.
In a statement, a Letterboxd representative said at the time: “As Letterboxd has grown, it’s natural there will be interest in what we do next. There’s nothing specific for us to share at this time. Any decision about Letterboxd’s future would involve the founders.”
