The Motion Picture Association signed two declarations at the Lumière Summit on Monday, adding its name alongside those of governments and private sector organizations worldwide to the Lumière Declaration on the Future
of Cinema and the Moving Image and the Declaration on Strengthened International Cooperation in the Fight Against Film and Audiovisual Piracy.
The summit was co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
MPA chair and CEO Charles Rivkin participated in two separate business roundtables – one with President Lee focused on the industry’s engagement with Korea’s creative sector, and one with President Macron on the future of the industry and opportunities to strengthen ties with France’s creative sector. Both sessions included MPA member studio CEOs.
“Our industry is fueled by a simple proposition: audiences love great stories, well told. … From the U.S. to France to Korea and beyond, we each have a stake in ensuring that our industry remains a force for openness, a source of investment, and a driver of jobs, growth, and opportunity. This summit proved a vital forum to translate that common ground into greater cooperation,” Rivkin said.
Emilie Anthonis, president and managing director of the MPA’s Europe, Middle East and Africa region, took part in a session on Korea’s expanding role in the worldwide film and television industry, which also featured President Lee. She also appeared in a session titled “The Race Against Piracy: A Global Challenge,” where she highlighted the work of the MPA and the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) – the world’s leading anti-piracy coalition – in addressing the cross-border scale of content theft. Anthonis welcomed the summit’s recognition that protecting intellectual property and fighting piracy are fundamental to sustaining the creative economy.
The MPA’s member studios are Netflix, Paramount Pictures, Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, Sony Pictures, Universal Studios, The Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery.
