Strand Releasing has acquired North American rights to Bruno Santamaria Razo’s debut feature “Six Months in a Pink and Blue Building,” the Mexican coming-of-age drama that premiered at Critics’ Week at this year’s Cannes
Film Festival.
Set in Mexico City in the early 1990s, “Six Months in a Pink and Blue Building” follows an 11-year-old boy grappling with his growing feelings for his best friend while his family is shaken by the news that his father has HIV. As his relatives attempt to sing and dance their way through the pain, the film later shifts three decades forward as the protagonist revisits and reimagines memories he was unable to fully understand as a child.
Razo also wrote the screenplay and produced the film alongside Bruna Haddad and Carlos H. Quiñónez for Mexico’s Ojo de Vaca Productora. The film was co-produced by Brazil’s Desvia Films and Denmark’s Snowglobe.
The acquisition follows the film’s strong festival momentum. Earlier this year, “Six Months in a Pink and Blue Building” won four awards in the Films in Progress section at Cinélatino Toulouse.
“Six Months in a Pink and Blue Building” also marked a milestone for Mexican cinema, becoming the country’s first feature selected for Cannes Critics’ Week in nearly two decades, since Ernesto Contreras’ “Blue Eyelid” screened in competition in 2007.
Strand plans to release the film in North America in spring 2027. “We’re thrilled to be working on this beautiful, unique film. Razo’s film is a completely realized narrative that utilizes his experience as a documentary filmmaker,” said Strand Releasing’s Jon Gerrans who negotiated the deal with Jean-Benoit Henry of Luxbox, which is handling international sales.
Speaking of his film selling to Strand for North America, Razo said, “There’s something beautiful about watching an intimate story find its way into the world and become universal through the people it reaches.”
Producers Haddad and Quiñónez said they had been searching for the right North American distributor since the film’s Cannes premiere.
“We couldn’t be happier to embark on this journey with Strand Releasing, whose outstanding work has helped bring many films by renowned Latin American directors to audiences across the United States,” they said in a joint statement.
Based in Culver City, Strand Releasing is headed by Gerrans and Marcus Hu, with a current slate including Yashaddai Owen’s “Jimmy,” Brydie O’Connor’s “Barbara Forever” and the 4K restoration re-release of Gregg Araki’s “Mysterious Skin.”
