Producers United is joining groups like the MPA and DGA to urge the nation’s lawmakers to back the proposed federal tax incentive for film and television production to “protect American workers and foster sustainable
careers.” The coalition of film and television producers released its statement at the start of Labor Day weekend, which “recognizes the contributions of American workers to the country’s strength and prosperity.”
The push for a federal tax incentive to counter the increase in productions outside the U.S. in recent years gained steam Monday when President Trump renewed his endorsement of the idea and called for a bipartisan bill. The federal tax incentive is one of the rare initiatives that is supported by both Democratic and Republican politicians and in Hollywood. Trump dubbed the proposed legislation the Motion Picture, Television, and Entertainment Revitalization Act.
“Producers United offers its strong support of the White House’s urgent call for a meaningful federal tax incentive to bring film and television production — and the tens of thousands of jobs and businesses it supports — back to the United States,” the statement said.
“A federal incentive that works alongside state programs, will level the playing field and refortify our domestic production ecosystem.
“As Career Producers responsible for creating and managing these projects, we urge lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to act now to support an incentive that protects American workers, fosters sustainable careers, and ensures that film and television can continue to be made here in the USA for everyone’s enjoyment around the world,” the group’s statement continued.
Charles Rivkin, head of the Motion Picture Association, offered his support after Trump’s statement, and the DGA has also been urging the studios to lobby for legislation.
