After director Wes Anderson, star Luke Wilson and producer James L. Brooks took the stage for a Q&A at the Academy Museum for a screening of “Bottle Rocket” Monday evening, the reunion got even more intimate when the trio
were stuck in an elevator at the museum for about a half an hour.
The Los Angeles Fire Department came to the aid of the “Bottle Rocket” team and several others who were trapped in the malfunctioning elevator, as seen in an Instagram video from production specialist Carolyn Dunn. On the video, Anderson asks the fire crew, “Do you have any theory as to what was wrong with it?” and a firefighter answers, “Probably had too much weight in it.”
The elevator in question appears to be the one that exits to the outdoor museum courtyard adjacent to the valet parking area, where a black car can be seen waiting, rather than the elevators that screening attendees use inside the complex.
The 30th anniversary screening and Q&A of Anderson’s debut feature, “Bottle Rocket” was a “rare L.A. appearance,” wrote Variety contributor Carlos Aguilar on X. “…as delightfuly peculiar as expected chatting with Luke Wilson and the legendary James L. Brooks.”
Owen Wilson, Ned Dowd and Shea Fowler also starred in the 1996 caper film that garnered a best new filmmaker award for Anderson at the MTV Movie Awards.
Starting on Friday, the Hollywood Bowl is hosting three nights of “Music from the Films of Wes Anderson” hosted by Bill Murray, with performances by Mark Mothersbaugh, Beck, Jenny Lewis, Jackson Brown and Jason Schwartzman. There’s no word yet whether Anderson is attending or how many elevators might be involved.
