Ewan McGregor is putting the pressure on Disney when it comes to playing Obi-Wan Kenobi again. The actor told E! News on the press tour for his latest movie, “The End of Oak Street,” that the ball is in Disney’s court
regarding his future with the “Star Wars” franchise. McGregor wants nothing more then to continue playing the legendary Jedi.
“I’m ready whenever they are,” McGregor said. “They just seem to not be ready, but I’m up for it. At the end of the ‘Obi-Wan’ series, I’m walking off into the desert and I’ve decided to leave. I’ve realized I can’t keep the pressure on Luke. I realized he has to have his own childhood, so I leave him with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. And I wander off… and Qui-Gon’s back. And we go off… but where are we going?”
“The next time we find Obi-Wan Kenobi, he’s Alec Guinness up in the mountains,” the actor continued. “What happens between those two moments is what I want to do and spend the rest of my career doing these stories. Stories, you know, series or movies. We’ve got plenty of time; I’ve got 10 years before I am Alec Guinesses’ age. So come on, Disney!”
McGregor debuted as Obi-Wan Kenobi in 1999’s “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.” While the movie polarized critics and “Star Wars” fans, most were in agreement about loving McGregor’s performance. He soon became a fan favorite in the galaxy far, far away while reprising Obi-Wan in 2002’s “Attack of the Clones” and 2005’s “Revenge of the Sith.” After a 17-year hiatus, McGregor returned as the Jedi in the 2022 Disney+ streaming series “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” which became the streamer’s second most-watched show of that year with 6.5 billion minutes viewed in the United States (per Luminate).
While the Disney+ series was always billed a limited series, McGregor has never been coy about his interest in returning for more. “I really hope we do another,” McGregor told British GQ in 2022 before the finale aired. “If I could do one of these every now and again — I’d just be happy about it.”
