After just seven days on the big screen, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has already supplanted “Toy Story 5” as the highest-grossing movie of the year.
Sony and Marvel’s web-slinging sequel, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya,
has generated $1.155 billion to date, including $449 million domestically and $706.3 million internationally. Those ticket sales are above Disney’s “Toy Story 5,” which has earned $1.067 billion since June.
The latest milestone builds on the film’s epic theatrical run, which also includes the biggest Tuesday ever at the domestic box office with $42 million, overtaking 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” with $39 million. “Brand New Day” delivered the highest-grossing Monday with $47 million, besting the high record set by 2018’s “Black Panther” with $40 million.
This “Spider-Man” adaptation is also the fastest film to notch $400 million in North America, taking just four days, and it’s the second-quickest movie to surpassing $1 billion, doing so in just six days. Only 2019’s Marvel mashup “Avengers: Endgame,” with a mind-boggling $1.2 billion worldwide in three days, got there faster. That’s on top of “Brand New Day” securing the biggest domestic debut in box office history with $360 million, as well as the second-largest global debut of all time with $932 million.
“So I guess movies aren’t dead after all?” Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, quipped on the Sunday of opening weekend.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige credits the ever-enduring appeal of Spider-Man, as well as the actor who has donned the Spandex in four solo adventures, for the heroic box office success of “Brand New Day.”
“People can write about changing tastes, but as characters that grow and evolve through the decades, there are none better than the Marvel characters — and none better than Peter Parker,” Feige said on Monday morning. “When you find an actor like Tom Holland to bring that character to life, it is the magic formula.”
