Stephen Root has won the Emmy for supporting actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of Wyck in Apple TV’s “Widow’s Bay.” This is his first win.
He has also broken the record — by two years — as the oldest actor to win
in this category. The title was previously held by Henry Winkler, who, at 72, won for his role as Gene Cousineau in “Barry.” Winkler’s record-setting win was also his first Emmy, coming in 42 years after his first nomination for “Happy Days.” Root was also nominated for his role as Monroe Fuches in “Barry” in 2019, one year after Winkler’s big night.
Accepting the Emmy, Root said, “I’m thrilled and delighted, but the reason I’m up here is Katie.” Root went on to call out his co-stars saying, “It is Matthew Rhys and the brilliant Kate O’Flynn and the comic stylings of these two are the best thing in the 21st century.”
He also took a moment to acknowledge his fellow nominees. “You are all unbelievable. I am a huge fan. Thank you, Harrison Ford, because my son came running up to me, and said, ‘You’re in a category with Harrison Ford! Thank you, sir, for your many years of great, great, great, great acting.”
Nominated alongside Root were Colman Domingo (“The Four Seasons”), Paul W. Downs (“Hacks”), Harrison Ford (“Shrinking”), Nick Offerman (“Margo’s Got Money Troubles”), Michael Urie (“Shrinking”) and Tyler James Williams (“Abbott Elementary”).
“Widow’s Bay” had a breakout year following its premiere in April. By June, the show had been renewed for a second season. It’s already received eight Emmys, all presented last weekend during the Creative Arts ceremonies. Root’s win marks the show’s tenth win. O’Flynn won the Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series earning the British actor her first Emmy on her first nomination.
Tonight, it competes in 10 more categories, including outstanding comedy series, directing, writing and lead actor (Matthew Rhys).
