Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist for the Mexican group Camilo Séptimo, his wife, 3-year-old daughter, and nanny were found murdered at their home near Mexico City, according to a statement from the State of Mexico Prosecutor’s
Office and CNN.
Ana Paula Meléndez, 35, was four months pregnant, according to authorities; a 6-year-old child was also found alive and unharmed inside the home, which is located in a residential complex in the municipality of Atizapán de Zaragoza residential complex.
“The victims, a 38-year-old male, music producer and songwriter identified by the initials J.S.M.O., his 35-year-old pregnant wife, their 3-year-old daughter, and a 21-year-old female,” the report reads. “Even a dog, the family pet, was found tied up.” Three of the victims were shot in the head, authorities said; the other was shot in the back.
Two men have been arrested in connection with the murders, according to a statement from Omar García Harfuch, the country’s secretary of public security. He said one of the suspects, partially identified by authorities as Diego Sebastián “N,” was a business partner of a victim and “allegedly used that relationship of trust to gain access to the residence.”
“Today we honor and celebrate his life, his music, his light, and what he shared with those of us fortunate enough to know him and walk alongside him,” Camilo Séptimo wrote in social media posts.
Camilo Séptimo was formed in Mexico City in 2013 by Meléndez (pictured above, right) singer Manuel Mendoza and guitarist Erik Vázquez. The band released an EP in 2014 and its first album, “Óleos” (“oil paintings”) in 2017, which reached No. 10 on the Mexican albums charts. The group followed with three more albums, the most recent being 2023’s “Jardín de las almas” (“garden of souls”).
