Andrew Garfield is set to receive the Maltin Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Feb. 6.
Joining film critic Leonard Maltin for an on-stage conversation, Garfield will reflect on his
decades-long career, including his upcoming performance in Luca Guadagnino’s “Artificial” where he plays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
“Andrew Garfield has long since proven himself to critics and audiences alike,” Maltin said. “It’s no simple matter to balance a career between mainstream Hollywood movies and challenging director-driven projects, but he has done exactly that and done it well.”
Throughout his career, Garfield has received two Academy Award nominations and won a Golden Globe and Tony Award. His credits include Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” David Fincher’s “The Social Network,” Martin Scorsese’s “Silence” and Luca Guadagnino’s “After The Hunt.” He also starred as Peter Parker in “The Amazing Spider-Man” films and earned an Emmy nomination for “Under the Banner of Heaven.”
The Modern Master Award was established in 1995 to celebrate an individual who enriched culture through their work in film. It was later renamed the Maltin Modern Master Award in 2015 in honor of film critic and long-time SBIFF moderator Leonard Maltin.
Garfield joins a lineup of past recipients that includes Adam Sandler, Angelina Jolie, Jamie Lee Curtis, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, Robert Downey Jr., Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, George Clooney, Christopher Plummer, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Sean Penn, Clint Eastwood and Peter Jackson.
The 42nd SBIFF will take place Feb. 3-13 and will feature screenings, filmmaker Q&As, industry panels and celebrity tributes.
