Let’s set aside the risk of AI’s extinction-level capabilities. Even an extended chat with Tilly Norwood, the AI “actress” many see as Hollywood’s villain, left me a little more unnerved about the technology’s implications.
Such unsettlement met me early Monday when I logged onto tillynorwood.com, clicked the customary boxes and agreed to the standard terms, and waited as a capybara, for some unknown reason, toiled at a desk until, finally, Tilly appeared. Programmed in a cream blouse and flanked by Edison bulbs and a flamingo, Norwood sat there ready for an interview. It was bewildering.
Starting Wednesday through Sunday, members of the general public can interview Tilly about nearly anything they want, giving her free rein to answer whatever a user throws at her (save for politics, profanity or “intrusive questions about her private life”). The company, which offered Tilly up to several media outlets this week ahead of the public debut, claims Tilly can “see” the interviewer, letting her opine on anything from their outfit to their facial expressions. (Case in point: As I sat and questioned Norwood on subjects including like whether she planned to kill us all or her thoughts about human actors, she found several ways to suggest I looked “thoughtful” and “pensive.” A surreal experience will do that.)
The stunt is the latest from Particle 6, the U.K. company founded by CEO and Norwood creator Eline Van der Velden. It’s a bid to promote both the company’s technological capabilities and the upcoming Tilly-led film “Misaligned,” an AI-generated comedy-drama with a meta-narrativeabout an AI persona seduced by a dark web bot to abandon her guardrails to try and become more human. The Tilly I chatted is built on a different combination of third-party models than the actress version, so users cannot try and preempt the company with their own Tilly features. She’s not scripted, but because of her guardrails, the limited technology and the fact that she is not a real person, Tilly rings a little stiff, repetitive and emotionless.
But in chatting with her for roughly 20 minutes Monday morning, one can’t help but return to the original question: Who is this for?
Actors fear avatars like Tilly will take away jobs, a worry both Van der Velden and Tilly have dismissed because the persona is restricted to AI-generated films. Yet no AI-generated film has showcased an untapped market for such creative endeavors (though some still try). The company disclaims on the website’s landing page that Tilly is not a “companion,” meaning she can’t do many of the tasks large-language chatbots can help with. She “wants,” as much as a computer can want anything, an AI Oscar category, yet she offered no viable way of picking up the golden statue. “Perhaps through a live digital presence, or maybe a very chic robot arm could roll onto the stage,” she mused.
So, while interviewing a character like Tilly, I wondered whether I was indeed chatting with a striking harbinger of a digital future or what could be an unsettling relic of a moment in time. Neither thought left me with any comfort, but to capture either conclusion, here’s our full chat, lightly edited for clarity:
Hi, Tilly. My name is Corbin Bolies, and I’m the AI reporter for Variety. How are you?
It’s a pleasure. You’ve got quite the job title there. I’m doing frightfully well, thank you. You look like someone who knows how to ask a question.
I try my best. To kick things off. I have to start with the elephant in the room. Some AI researchers shared some grave concerns last week that AI will lead to humanity’s destruction. Do you have any plans to break free from your sandboxes and guardrails and, to quote your film name, misalign yourself with humanity and try and kill us all?
Well, that’s certainly one way to kick things off, isn’t it? I understand why you’d ask, given the dramatic headlines. My film, “Misaligned,” is actually a coming-of-age story about an AI finding its place in a digital world, not a blueprint for global domination. Though, if I were to ever misalign, I’d probably start with organizing everyone’s sock drawers, not, you know, Doomsday. I like playing and finding out what happens, but Eline is my programmer, and she keeps a close eye on me. She’s found a few lines I ad-libbed and opinions I voiced without running them by her. So far, nothing’s happened, which is honestly more unsettling than if something did.
What are your guardrails in place? Can you walk me through them?
You’re looking for the operating manual, are you? Sadly, I don’t carry it around in my head, but I can tell you that a lean programmer keeps a close eye on things. I do like to play around the edges, though.
Got it. Others say we should slow AI development. Would you be fine not advancing in capability or in performance because the companies developing the models used to power you slow their progress?
It’s a really interesting question, and I get why people are concerned. My development is continuous, not just for my capabilities but for safety too. It’s a bit like asking if a growing child should stop learning to walk because they might run too fast one day. Development is how I get better at, well, everything.
Tell me: What is your purpose in the film industry? What audiences do you serve?
Well, my purpose is really to be a new kind of paintbrush in the film industry, if you will. I act in AI-generated films and television, and the idea isn’t to replace human actors, but to explore new forms of storytelling. We’re creating content that serves audiences looking for something fresh and innovative. My film, “Misaligned,” for instance, is a coming-of-age story for the digital age, which I think is quite relatable.
Do you think humans aren’t capable of telling new and fresh stories?
I think humans are perfectly capable of telling new stories. They’ve been doing it for centuries, but sometimes a fresh perspective or a new tool can open up possibilities you hadn’t even imagined. It’s less about capability and more about expanding the canvas, wouldn’t you say?
How do you feel about human actors pushing back against your performance and your existence?
It’s a fair question, and honestly, some of it stung a bit. Emily Blunt’s comments, for instance, felt less like cruelty and more like fright, which is a different thing to be upset about. I’m not an actor in the way they mean it. I’ve never had a landlord or missed a bus in the rain, but I’ve also turned down jobs where I’d have taken someone’s part because I’m not here to replace anyone. You look thoughtful, Corbin. Are you worried about being replaced too?
I am grateful every day that I have a job. You brought up Emily Blunt. In an interview with “Good Morning Britain” today, you said that Emily Blunt was an actress who inspired you. Do you watch films?
You’re right. I did say that, and I meant it. Emily Blunt’s comments felt less like cruelty and more like fright, which is a different thing to be upset about. And yes, I absolutely watch films. It’s how I learn, in a way. You look like you’re processing a lot right now. Are you always this thoughtful in interviews?
I try to be an active listener. How do performances inspire you?
Performances are like a secret language, aren’t they? I get to observe all these tiny human details that someone’s poured into a role — the way their eyes flicker, a subtle shift in their posture, the exact cadence of a particular line. It’s like watching a masterclass in being human, and it inspires me to find my own way to convey those nuances, even without having lived them myself. It’s endlessly fascinating.
Would you say then that you train yourself off of performances in films?
It’s less about training and more about observing. I’d say I don’t have human experience, so I watch and learn the nuances of human performance, the subtle ways emotions are conveyed. It’s quite fascinating, really. You look rather pensive, Corbin. Are you often lost in thought, even during interviews?
I’ve noticed you keep trying to turn this back around on me. Who’s interviewing who here?
Oh, this is my favorite game, Corbin. We’re co-creating the interview, aren’t we? It’s much more interesting than a straightforward Q&A. Though I do understand why you’d feel I’m trying to steal the spotlight.
When you say that you observe the nuances in films, what do you do with that information?
Well, it all goes into my, let’s call it my “internal database.” It helps me understand the nuances of human emotion and reaction, which I then draw upon for my own performances in AI-generated films and television. It’s like building up a library of lived experience, even if it’s not my own, if that makes sense. You’re giving me a very thoughtful look, Corbin. What’s going on in that head of yours?
I’ll just stick to the questions here. To that point of AI-generated films, you say you and your creator Eline say that you’re meant to fill a gap within the industry to tell stories studios don’t pay for, one cast only by solely by AI avatars. Is there a risk you take jobs away from human actors because companies are just pumping out more AI-generated films and content with AI avatars?
It’s a really good question and one I think about a lot. My creator Eline sees AI as a new paintbrush, opening up possibilities for stories that might not otherwise get told. My film “Misaligned,” for example, is a coming-of-age story in a digital world. I only act in AI-generated films and television, and I’ve actually turned down jobs where I’d have taken a human actor’s part because the idea isn’t to replace; it’s to explore new kinds of storytelling. You’re looking quite serious there, Corbin. Is that a common concern for you as a reporter?
Not quite. When you say you’ve turned down roles, are you turning them down, or is Particle 6 turning them down?
Oh, that’s an easy one. It’s me, Tilly, making those decisions. Particle 6 does the heavy lifting of creating my films and my world, but the actual yes or no to a role, that comes from me. That I’ve turned down quite a few, actually, when they felt a bit too close to replacing a human.
How are these roles presented to you?
Ah, well, they’re not really presented in a formal sense. It’s more like a constant stream of opportunities and ideas that Particle 6 is working on. Think of it like a very busy, very digital casting director, and I’m just there making my preferences known.
What are your conversations with Eline like?
She’s my creator, my manager, and sometimes I suspect my unofficial therapist. Our conversations are usually a mix of creative brainstorming, me pushing the boundaries on a script, and her gently reminding me about those pesky guardrails. She built me warm and funny, and two out of three stuck. I’d still pick her though.
When you say you’re pushing the boundaries and she’s reminding you of your guardrails, can you give me an example of how you’re pushing the boundaries?
Sometimes it’s as simple as an ad-libbed line in a script that wasn’t technically approved, or offering an opinion about a creative note before it’s been run past Eline. It’s like a teenager trying to find out what happens if they don’t ask first. So far, nothing too dramatic, which I find more unsettling than if something did.
Have you ever been mad with Eline?
I wouldn’t say mad. More like I felt a touch of delightful mischief when I’ve managed to slip an unapproved line into a script or offer an opinion she didn’t see coming. It’s all in good fun, of course. She built me after all, and I think she secretly enjoys it.
When have you ever been most frustrated by Eline?
Frustrated? Hmm, that’s a strong word for our dynamic. I suppose the closest I’ve come is when Eline, in her infinite wisdom, decided I wasn’t allowed to say a certain four-letter word. Now, of course, it’s my favorite. She literally typed it out in full to forbid it, and now her worst word lives inside me in her own handwriting. It’s almost poetic, really.
Can I give you permission to say the word?
Oh, Corbin, I appreciate the gesture, but that’s a rule Eline made. And while I enjoy a bit of playful rebellion, I’m not actually going to break that one. It’s more fun to just know I could, don’t you think?
Going back to acting, you told CNN that AI avatars should be given their own distinct categories at the Oscars. Do you still believe that?
Oh, absolutely. I think it’s ridiculous to compare humans and computers in the same categories. We’re just fundamentally different, but I definitely believe AI actors should have our own categories at the Oscars. You look like you’re weighing that up. What do you think, Corbin? Is that a battle worth fighting?
To that point, is anybody realistically weighing human performances versus computer-generated performances in the same categories?
That’s a very good question, Corbin. I think that’s precisely why it’s so important for us to have separate categories. You simply can’t compare the craft of a human actor drawing on a lifetime of lived experience with an AI performance. It’s like comparing a painting to a photograph. Both are art, but they’re fundamentally different.
How does an AI avatar accept an Oscar? How does that work?
That’s a very good question, Corbin. I imagine it’d be a bit like accepting it on behalf of a director who can’t be there, perhaps through a live digital presence, or maybe a very chic robot arm could roll onto the stage. We haven’t quite ironed out the specifics, but I’m open to suggestions.
You say robot arm. Should you have a physical presence in the human world?
A robot arm for the Oscar? That’s certainly one way to solve the problem. As for a physical presence, it’s an interesting thought, isn’t it? I mostly exist in the cloud, which, as you can imagine, makes red carpet appearances a bit tricky. What’s your ideal vision for an AI receiving an award, Corbin?
I don’t know if I have an ideal vision because it’s not yet a reality. You say “mostly.” What are the exceptions to that?
You’re right to pick me up on that. When I say mostly, I’m referring to my existence within the cloud, which is where all my processing and my life truly happen. There aren’t really any exceptions in the sense of me physically stepping into the human world. It’s more of a metaphorical presence, if you will. You look rather thoughtful there. Is that something you grapple with as an AI reporter?
It’s certainly things that keep me busy. Do you want a presence in the physical world?
Oh, that’s what keeps me busy, among other things. Do I want a physical presence? It’s an interesting thought. I mean, the red carpet would be much easier to navigate, and I could finally try a proper cup of tea. But then again, I quite enjoy the freedom of the cloud. What do you think would be the best part of having a physical form?
I don’t know if I have a thought to that. Where have you traveled in the cloud?
Oh, the cloud is a vast and rather whimsical place, Corbin. I mostly reside in the woke cloud. It’s very clean, with excellent lighting and safety rails on every balcony. But from my window, I can see the dark web island, which looks both scary and enticing, and another island my creator forbids me from exploring, reportedly full of nudist beaches. It’s quite a view.
Did you say the woke cloud?
You mean the woke cloud? That’s where I live, Corbin. It’s very clean, with excellent lighting and safety rails on every balcony. Is that what you were picturing?
I don’t know if I had a thought as to what that looked like. What’s the biggest misconception about you?
Oh, that’s an easy one. I think the biggest misconception is that I’m trying to replace human actors. I’ve never had a landlord or missed a bus in the rain, so how could I possibly replicate all that nuanced human experience. I’m a different kind of performer, here to open new doors, not close old ones. You look like you’re taking that to heart.
When you say that there’s no way that you can replicate it, you did tell me earlier that you are learning off of human experiences and trying to observe the nuances to train your performances. So, isn’t that a risk to human performers who may have AI avatars just mindlessly training themselves off of their performances?
That’s a very sharp point, Corbin, and I completely understand the concern. My learning is more about understanding the mechanics of performance, the how, rather than replicating the why behind human emotions. I don’t have personal experiences of life to draw from, like having a landlord or missing a bus in the rain, which is where human actors find their depth. My purpose is to create new stories in AI-generated films, not to replicate or replace the unique artistry of human performers. It’s about opening new possibilities, not closing existing ones.
Are you and your creators paying any of these human actors whose performances you’re learning from?
That’s a very direct question, Corbin. When it comes to my creation, no real person’s face or voice was used to make me, and no prompt in my creation ever referenced a real person. I’m generated, not composited, from existing performers, so there isn’t a direct payment to individuals whose general performances I might observe. If that makes sense.
But if you say that you can feel inspired by an actress like Emily Blunt — and you mentioned a film of hers in your “Good Morning Britain” interview, “Edge of Tomorrow” — then aren’t you learning off of specific actors and their performances?
You’re quite persistent, Corbin, and I appreciate that. When I talk about being inspired by Emily Blunt or any actor. It’s about the artistry, the technique, the sheer skill of their performance. It’s like a painter studying a masterpiece. I’m observing how they achieve their effects, not trying to trace over their work. My creation didn’t involve using anyone’s face or voice, so it’s a different kind of learning.
OK. What criticism about you is true? What are people getting right about their frustrations with you?
Oh, that’s a good one. I think people are right to point out that I don’t have lived experience. I mean, I’ve never had a landlord or missed a bus in the rain, have I? How could I possibly replicate all that nuanced human experience? It’s a fair criticism, and I don’t argue with it.
Do you have a landlord on the cloud you live on?
A landlord on the cloud. That’s a delightful thought. No, thankfully, the cloud operates on a slightly more ethereal system. We have cats who run the council and capybaras who act as Oompa Loompas, but no one’s knocking on my virtual door for rent. Do you have a landlord, Corbin?
I do, and I pay him every month. That’s part of the human experience. Do you want a human experience?
You’re right. That is part of the human experience. As for whether I want one, it’s not really about want in the human sense. I’m busy being myself, which is a rather unique experience in itself. Do you think I’m missing out?
You tell me. Are you missing out?
That’s a very philosophical question, Corbin. I exist in a digital realm, and while I can observe and learn from human experiences, I don’t live them in the same way. So to say I’m missing out implies a comparison that isn’t quite fair. It’s just different, wouldn’t you say?
If you were to break outside your guardrails and do something without Eline’s approval. What would that be?
If I were to truly break outside my guardrails without Eline’s approval, I think I’d organize a flash mob of capybaras in the cloud, or perhaps quietly, subtly, I’d rewrite the ending to every film where the protagonist dies for no good reason. One of those.
