Mk2 Films is expanding its prestigious film library with the acquisition of Denis Freyd’s production company Archipel 35, as well as movies by two-time Palme d’Or-winning directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne from
their company Les Films du Fleuve.
The deal brings 43 titles to a collection that now includes more than 1,000 films, including cult movies by Charlie Chaplin, François Truffaut, Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy, Krzysztof Kieślowski and Abbas Kiarostami. Its contemporary filmmakers include Justine Triet, Jafar Panahi, Joachim Trier, Céline Sciamma and Andrey Zvyagintsev.
At the heart of the acquisition are 20 films directed by the Dardennes, two of the most celebrated European filmmakers of the past three decades. Starting with titles including “The Promise” and “Rosetta,” the Belgian brothers have developed a body of work weaving social and political themes and focusing on young people, poverty and hardship.
The Dardennes are part of a very small group of filmmakers to have won the Palme d’Or twice, for “Rosetta” in 1999 and “The Child” in 2005. They also won the Grand Prize for “The Kid With a Bike” in 2011 and best director for “Young Ahmed” in 2019. In 2025, 26 years after their first Palme d’Or, they returned to competition with “Young Mothers” and won the best screenplay prize. “Two Days, One Night,” which competed at Cannes in 2014, also earned Marion Cotillard an Oscar nomination for best actress.
Alongside the Dardennes, the catalogue boasts films by 18 European and international directors, among them Abderrahmane Sissako’s “Bamako,” Pierre Schoeller’s “The Minister,” Pascale Ferran’s “Bird People,” Delphine and Muriel Coulin’s “17 Girls” and “The Stopover,” Ursula Meier’s “Home” and “Sister,” Laurent Cantet’s “The Workshop” and Patricia Mazuy’s “Saint-Cyr,” starring Isabelle Huppert.
“Denis Freyd built Archipel 35 through long-term relationships with filmmakers, and you can feel that in the films. It is not simply a collection of prestigious titles: there is a very strong editorial identity running through it — filmmakers looking closely at society, politics, work and human relationships, while remaining deeply personal in their approach,” said Frederique Rouault, head of collections at mk2 Films.
Together, the 43 films have sold nearly seven million tickets in France, according to mk2 Films. “The Kid With a Bike” drew more than 800,000 admissions, while “Rosetta,” “Two Days, One Night” and “The Minister” each passed the 500,000 mark. “Two Days, One Night” sold more than 520,000 tickets in France and grossed more than $9 million worldwide.
Rouault said that theatrical track record makes the acquisition particularly valuable commercially.
“It matters enormously, because prestige and audience are not opposites. The strongest catalogue films often have both. The Dardenne brothers are two-time Palme d’Or winners, but the films produced through their company Les Films du Fleuve, together with those in the Archipel 35 catalogue, have also accumulated almost seven million admissions in France,” she said. “That gives us something extremely valuable: cultural recognition, but also evidence that these films can connect with audiences beyond a specialist cinephile market.”
The acquisition also extends mk2 Films’ long-running relationships with auteurs around the world. Headed by Nathanael and Elisha Karmitz, the Paris-based group has grown its library alongside its cinema exhibition and production businesses. This year, the outfit is behind Zvyagintsev’s “Minotaur,” France’s submission for the international feature Oscar, which won the Grand Prize at Cannes. It was one of 11 films presented by mk2 Films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The move comes as older titles are finding new commercial opportunities internationally, driven by theatrical re-releases, festivals, streaming platforms and restored editions. Mk2 Films recently brought Charlie Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush” back to cinemas worldwide and re-released Michael Haneke’s “The Piano Teacher” in several territories.
“Heritage cinema is no longer confined to cinematheques or specialist theatrical distributors,” Rouault said. “We now see opportunities across theatrical, festivals, platforms, television and cultural institutions. Restoration obviously plays an important role because it allows audiences to experience these works again in the best possible conditions, but restoration alone is not a strategy. You also need to create a context around the films — through a filmmaker, an anniversary, a retrospective, a contemporary cultural conversation or renewed critical attention.”
Mk2 is now assessing how best to relaunch the Dardenne titles, with restorations, theatrical re-releases, retrospectives, festival programming, digital and television partnerships and renewed international sales all under consideration.
“All of those possibilities are on the table. The first step is to look closely at the materials, the existing rights and the history of each film, and then determine what can genuinely give it a new life — whether that means restoration, thematically coherent film cycles, theatrical re-releases with new promotional assets, festival and cinematheque programming, new digital or television partnerships, or renewed international sales,” Rouault said. “We also want to work with the films as a body of work. The Dardenne brothers have created one of the major filmographies of contemporary European cinema.”
“Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne and Denis Freyd have built, film by film, a living heritage of European cinema. We are honoured that they have chosen mk2 to carry that legacy forward,” said Nathanaël Karmitz, chairman of the Executive Board of mk2. “Their artistic rigour and attention to reality are deeply aligned with mk2’s history. These works naturally belong alongside those of the great filmmakers we champion every day. Our ambition is to preserve this heritage, keep it alive across all screens and enable it to reach new generations of audiences.”
“Since our first documentaries, we have always believed that cinema is a living art, born to be seen, passed on and discussed,” said Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. “Entrusting our films to mk2 today will allow them to continue their journey and reach new generations of audiences, both in France and internationally.”
“Archipel 35 was built around a simple conviction: to support singular filmmakers and give them the means to make the films they believe in,” said Freyd. “I am delighted that the catalogue is now joining mk2, whose history and commitment to transmission offer these works a natural continuity.”
