The music industry has never had fewer gatekeepers.
Independent artists are increasingly
releasing music without traditional label deals, while established acts have more options for retaining ownership and control over their recordings. In 2025, more than a third of artists who generated at least $10,000 in Spotify royalties were DIY artists — meaning they self-released through independent distributors — or had started their careers that way, according to Spotify. Roughly half of the royalties the service paid to the music industry last year were generated by independent artists and labels.
That shift has made understanding music distribution increasingly important. More than 100,000 new recordings were delivered to digital service providers every day in 2025, according to Luminate, up 7% from the previous year, with the growth largely coming from outside the major-label distribution system. At the same time, streaming remains the engine of the U.S. recorded-music business, generating $9.47 billion in 2025.
In other words: Artists have more ability than ever to put out music themselves, but doing so means taking on some of the business mechanics once handled largely behind the scenes by labels.
The key piece of that infrastructure is the music distributor.
In the physical era, distribution largely meant pressing records and CDs, shipping them to retailers and getting them onto store shelves. Today, digital distributors act as the bridge between an artist and Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, TikTok and other platforms.
Artists have a growing number of distribution platforms to choose from, including DistroKid. While companies differ in how they charge and the services they layer around basic distribution, DistroKid uses an annual subscription model and allows artists to upload multiple releases for distribution across major digital services. All plans, which start at $24.99/year, include unlimited music uploads and royalty-splitting tools, while higher tiers add features such as customizable release dates, daily streaming statistics and support for multiple artists – all while not taking a percentage of the earnings that streaming services and stores send for an artist’s music.
Once music is live, distributors also help collect recording revenue reported by streaming services and stores and make that money available to the artist or other master-rights holder. That is separate from music publishing: royalties generated by the underlying composition can travel through publishers, performing-rights organizations and other collection systems.
For an artist choosing a distributor, the questions are therefore increasingly consequential. Which services and territories does it reach? Does it charge annually, per release or take a percentage of revenue? How does it handle collaborator splits, metadata corrections, release scheduling and payouts? And what happens to an artist’s catalog if a subscription lapses or the artist later changes distributors?
Timing is another consideration. Uploading a song does not mean it appears instantly everywhere, and different services can require different processing windows. Distribution increasingly sits near the beginning of a release rollout rather than functioning as a tacked-on last step.
None of this means distribution itself creates a hit. It doesn’t guarantee streams, playlist placement or an audience. If anything, the explosion in releases has made discovery more competitive: Luminate counted an average of 106,000 recordings arriving at digital platforms every day last year.
But the same system has also made it possible for far more artists to reach a global audience without first securing a conventional record deal. As the line between “independent” and mainstream artists continues to blur, knowing how music actually gets from the studio to Spotify — and who controls the money and rights along the way — has become more important than ever.
