Speaking about an editing error that triggered a $10 billion defamation lawsuit pursued by President Donald Trump against the BBC, the broadcaster’s deputy director-general Rhodri Talfan-Davies said Tuesday that “a
lot has changed since then.”
Talfan-Davies said there were two issues about the BBC’s handling of the controversial episode of investigative show “Panorama.” “One was the actual edit itself, and second, and I think probably more profound in the end, was the BBC’s sluggishness in its response,” he told journalists at a Broadcasting Press Guild lunch.
He outlined the measures that the BBC had implemented to address these issues, which included his own appointment in June 2026.
“A lot has changed since then. There’s been a reform of the editorial standards committee, which has been led by Caroline Thomson. The role of the deputy director-general has been created precisely to grip those types of moments and make sure that we get to quick, timely decisions,” he said.
He added that the BBC had “instigated over the last 12 months what we call ‘Final Gate’ processes on our most contentious programs.” Explaining what these “Final Gate” processes were, he said, “It means that before you commit to transmission or broadcasting, all the key players involved in the title, including editorial policy, including compliance execs in each of the key genre, they get in the room and they go line by line through the key risks of the program. So there is a really diligent and thorough assessment of the program before it airs.”
He cautioned that he couldn’t guarantee that “there won’t be future issues in an organization that digs deep and delivers big investigations … I mean, I’m not naïve.”
However, he added, “I do think the processes and controls put in place in the last 12 months put us in a much stronger place.”
