Santa Monica-based Outsider Pictures has picked up Rafiki Fariala’s award-winning Cannes title “Congo Boy” for the U.S. ahead of its North American premiere at Toronto.
The film bowed in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard, where
it won Bradley Fiomona the best actor prize for his role as 17-year-old Robert, whose family was forced to flee the Democratic Republic of Congo for the neighboring Central African Republic. With his parents are imprisoned, Robert does what he can to care for his four younger siblings while attending high school, hoping to get into medical school and finding musical success despite all the odds stacked against him.
Variety’s Murtada Elfadl praised the film as a “stirring musical drama” that “beats with the rhythms of resilience.”
“Congo Boy” is set to play a number of fall festivals in the U.S. ahead of a planned release in the spring of 2027.
“I will be releasing the film in as many cities as I can since the film deals with the hardships of life but also our dreams, and right now everyone can relate to that and the film is ultimately an upbeat audience friendly film,” Outsider Pictures founder and CEO Paul Hudson told Variety.
The film’s story very much parallels that of Fariala’s life. A Congolese refugee who came to the Central African Republic as a child, “Congo Boy” is his story told through fiction, according to the director.
“It’s the story of the year my parents went to prison — the year I found myself alone with four younger siblings and forced to find a way to survive. The year music became my lifeline. Everything that happens in the film really happened to me.”
In telling his story, Fariala hoped to encourage audiences “to see refugees differently” and to illustrate that “there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” the director previously told Variety.
A four-country co-production, “Congo Boy” is produced by Makongo Films, based in the Central African capital of Bangui, Unité in France, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Kiripifilms and Karta Film in Italy.
Paris-based The Party Film Sales is handling “Congo Boy” internationally. The film has sold across Europe and beyond, including such major territories as Germany and Austria, where it will be released by Immergute Filme, France via Jour2fête, and Brazil, where Ipecine is distributing.
“Congo Boy” follows Fariala’s award-winning 2022 debut feature, “We, Students!” which bowed in Berlin. The documentary captures the everyday life of the director and his fellow students at the Central African Republic’s Bangui University.
