There’s perhaps a good reason why the long-awaited reunion of Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher after more than a decade apart wasn’t filled with emotion or, indeed, a whole lot of conversation, and it’s not simply
due to the nature of the individuals.
Noel explained it himself in an unseen clip from “Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger,” the Disney+ documentary following last year’s reunion and sell out world tour, shown at a special event at London’s famed Abbey Road on Monday night.
“Family is different, you don’t have to say anything, it’s as simple as that,” he says in the clip, taken from the first joint interview with Gallaghers in 25 years. “And you don’t have to justify not saying anything to anyone else.”
Had it been former Sex Pistol bandmates John Lydon or Steve Jones, Noel says there might have been some angry finger pointing and accusations. But with the Gallaghers, it was just a case of “How are you doing? And that’s it”
Speaking at the Abbey Road event were “Don’t Look Back in Anger” writer/creator Steven Knight and co-directors Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern. The reunion, said Lovelace, was exactly how Noel had described it.
“They walked back into a room together and we filmed it, and they started, and Oasis was back,” he said. “So when Noel says family is different, you don’t have to say anything. He literally means family is different. You don’t have to say anything, and that’s what happened.”
In another special clip, which will be made available when “Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger” — already this year’s highest grossing documentary in the U.K — launches on Disney+ on Oct. 9, Liam joked that they mother used to tell him he was her favorite. “She d go, you’re my fucking number one son,” he says, before joking about how she’d change the photos on her walls depending on which of the brothers was visiting.
“One of the most important things about them both is how funny they are,” said Knight, who also revealed that seeing the doc footage of the fans from the tour was a deeply humbling experience.
“For me, as a writer of fiction, this is the first thing I’ve done that’s a documentary, and it’s very humbling because it seems that you can point a camera at a real person, like that Welsh woman at the end, who is just brilliantly, eloquently, fantastically drunk and wonderful,” he said. “What I do for a living is try pathetically to get somewhere close to what that is.”
