A movie based on “Cyberpunk 2077,” the popular sci-fi, open-world RPG from CD Projekt Red, is in the works at Paramount, Variety has confirmed.
“Transformers” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to the project.
CD Projekt Red, video game developer and the franchise rights holder, also serves as producer on the project.
“Cyberpunk 2077,” which launched in December 2020 after several delays, is set in the seedy, neon metropolis of Night City. As the player, you assume the role of V, a gun for hire who becomes imbued with a “biochip” that harbors the digital likeness of rock star and notorious criminal Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves. V must then work with Johnny to separate their consciousness, all while taking on the evil megacorporation Arasaka, which rules over the dystopian cityscape.
Despite its choppy development and an initial release plagued by widespread performance issues, “Cyberpunk 2077” ultimately became a major success for CD Projekt Red, selling 40 million copies worldwide. Its expansion, “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty,” has sold 15 million copies.
Video game to big-screen adaptations, once a joke in Hollywood, have become a big ticket at the box office. The gold rush kicked off with the success of films like “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “The Minecraft Movie.” Obviously, all three of those films are skewed toward a younger audience. Paramount seems to be gunning for the big kids with “Cyberpunk 2077.” In line with that strategy, Paramount also has “Call of Duty” with director Peter Berg and screenwriter Taylor Sheridan,” as well as “Street Fighter,” which hits theaters Oct. 16.
