Charlie Brooker’s new Netflix series has revealed its title — “Blackmere” — not to be confused with the writer and producer’s other show for the streamer, “Black Mirror.”
Netflix announced the show’s title, some first-look
images and the news that Rory Kinnear (“The Diplomat,” “Black Mirror”) has joined the cast at its U.K. upfronts in London on Thursday. Kinnear stars alongside Paddy Considine, Georgina Campbell and Lena Headey in the four-part series, coming early 2027, which is described as an “absurd comedy disguised as an incredibly serious crime thriller,” according to its synopsis.
“Tormented Detective John Blackmere (Considine) leaves the rain-soaked Northern city of Bleakford for London to avenge his partner’s death and catch a ritualistic serial killer before they run out of victims,” the plot description continues. “Contains blood and frowning.”
“Blackmere” was created and written by Brooker, with co-writers including Ben Caudell, Jason Hazeley, Emer Kenny, Daniel Maier and Joel Morris, plus additional material by Victoria Asare Archer. Brooker executive produces alongside Jessica Rhoades and Annabel Jones, with Mark Kinsella co-executive producing and Richard Webb producing. Al Campbell is the series director.
Brooker’s new series was first announced last year as the “Untitled Charlie Brooker Project.” “I’m beyond thrilled to be saying these words for the press release. I’ve dreamt of providing a quote ever since I was a young foetus, and now here I am doing it,” Brooker said at the time. “I’d pinch myself, but like all of us, I’m terrified that if I do that, I might wake up and discover 2025 has all been a magical dream. Please watch my show. I am begging you.”
Besides “Blackmere,” Brooker’s highly successful “Black Mirror” is set to return to Netflix for an eighth season, which started production this summer.
