Watermelon Pictures has acquired “Everything Is Not OK,” a documentary from director Dev Benegal chronicling the life of artist Judith Blum Reddy.
The film will stream
exclusively on Watermelon+, the distributor’s streaming platform.
The producing team pairs Benegal with Min(d) Studio’s Maya S. Patel and Neeraj Jain, while Annemarie Jacir (“Palestine 36”) has signed on as executive producer.
“Everything Is Not OK” follows Reddy, whose work as an artist has been shaped by the Holocaust and by displacements that carried her from New York to Paris and ultimately India. The documentary threads Reddy’s story together with those of fellow artists Nil Yalter, Zarina and Camille Billops, each of whom channeled displacement into their art. Palestinian, Kashmiri and Indian poets are interwoven throughout, framing the film as a meditation on remembering what has been erased from home and pushing back once staying quiet stops being an option.
“For Judy, making art is an act of confrontation. An act of liberation. A refusal to let erasure win,” Benegal said. “‘Everything Is Not OK’ is not only a portrait of an artist — it is a meditation on what it means to create, remember and resist through art when silence is no longer an option.”
Jacir signed on as executive producer after connecting with the film’s exploration of memory and resistance. “In a moment when the world tilts towards intolerance, Judy’s story is a reminder that memory refuses to disappear and art can still be an act of resistance,” Jacir said.
Jacir and actor Adam Bakri both lend their voices to the film’s readings of revolutionary poetry.
Benegal is also known for directing “English, August” and “Road, Movie.” A restored version of “English, August,” undertaken by the Film Heritage Foundation, is playing at the Venice Film Festival. The 1994 film is based on Upamanyu Chatterjee’s novel “English, August: An Indian Story” and stars Rahul Bose.
The creative team behind “Everything Is Not OK” includes Jain doubling as producer and additional cinematography; Patel as producer; Dhruv Goel composing the music; Jean-Luc Panda as cinematographer; Mona Gesbel as editor; Anurag Jadhao on sound design; and Rob Sciarratta as colorist.
Watermelon Pictures launched in 2024. Its distribution and production credits include “From Ground Zero” and “All That’s Left of You” alongside “Palestine 36,” all three shortlisted in the Academy Award’s international feature category, plus the Oscar-nominated “The Voice of Hind Rajab.” Hamza Ali and co-founder Badie Ali brought the Watermelon+ platform online in May 2025, positioning it as the largest single collection of Palestinian film ever assembled in one place.
