The “Clueless” sequel series has found a new home. The show, which will see Alicia Silverstone reprise the role of Cher Horowitz, has been greenlit at Paramount+.
The project was originally set up for development at
Peacock in early 2025, but it was reported in April 2026 that it was no longer moving forward at that streaming service. Sources say that Paramount+ has given the show a six-episode order. It is slated to begin production in Los Angeles in 2027. According to sources, the production has submitted paperwork with the California Film Commission to receive state tax subsidies.
As previously reported, the show will be set in the present day. The logline states, “Beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz (Silverstone) has figured out a lot: She’s successful in business and has mastered motherhood—that is, until her daughter’s high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel ‘clueless’ all over again.”
The greenlight makes sense on a number of fronts. “Clueless” was originally released by Paramount Pictures in 1995, meaning the series will now stay in-house rather than going to an outside streamer. Universal Television was attached as co-studio when the project was set up at Peacock, but will now be produced solely by Paramount-owned CBS Studios.
In addition, Paramount+ has been in the market for more female-skewing content ever since the Paramount-Skydance merger was completed and Cindy Holland took on oversight of Paramount’s direct-to-consumer business. To that end, Holland’s team has already commissioned the legal drama “Discretion” starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning as well as the limited series “Fear Not” starring Anne Hathaway.
The new “Clueless” series is written by Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss. All three are executive producers, with Schwartz and Savage producing under their Fake Empire banner. Silverstone also executive produces, as does the film’s writer and director, Amy Heckerling, as well as the film’s producer, Robert Lawrence. CBS Studios will produce.

“Clueless” originally debuted in 1995 and is loosely based on the Jane Austen novel “Emma.” Along with Silverstone, the cast included Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya. A TV adaptation aired on ABC and then UPN from 1996 until 1999 for three seasons, with Rachel Blanchard playing Cher. The film was also recently added to the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
