Two years ago, Edinburgh Intl. Film Festival was talking rebuild. Now it can start talking momentum.
The world’s longest continually running film festival opens its 79th edition Thursday with 38 new feature presentations,
21 world premieres, a pumping 30th-anniversary celebration of “Trainspotting,” Ewan McGregor, Kenneth Branagh and Ken Burns in town, a beefed-up industry program and, for the first time in the U.K., a Variety Lounge.
Running Aug. 13-19, EIFF 2026 marks the third edition under CEO and festival director Paul Ridd and festival producer Emma Boa. Their reboot has sharpened Edinburgh’s proposition: a historic festival, compact footprint, meaningful cash prizes and a determined bid to become the U.K.’s “home of independent cinema.”
Admissions rose from 12,000 in 2024 to 16,500 last year, when more than 300 filmmakers, producers and distributors attended. Industry events nearly doubled from 13 to 25.
“Heading into the third edition of our revamped, reimagined and reinvigorated Edinburgh International Film Festival feels like hitting a stride we have been working towards since the start of 2024,” Ridd said on unveiling the program.
Here are seven takes on EIFF 2026:
Scottish Bookends
Edinburgh opens with Louis Paxton’s feature debut “The Incomer,” starring Domhnall Gleeson and Gayle Rankin and set on a remote Scottish island. Arriving after taking Sundance’s NEXT Innovator Award, it makes for a canny opener: distinctly Scottish, but already carrying international festival credentials. Tomris Laffly described it in her Variety review as “winsome and disarmingly good-natured.”
Louise Lockwood’s “Bel” closes the festival with its world premiere. The documentary profiles Glasgow musician and artist Beldina Odenyo, a.k.a. Heir of the Cursed.
So, Scottish bookends for a festival intent on celebrating its roots while looking well beyond Scotland.
World Premieres
The real engine of EIFF 2026 is discovery.
Its 21 world premieres include Abdolreza Kahani’s Canadian-set thriller “Empty Heaven,” William Scoular’s “Northbound,” starring Hollywood legend Bruce Dern, Alexis Alexiou, who broke out with his Sitges-winning “Istoria 52” back in 2008, comes with “Sea of Glass” and Paul Wright’s “Mission,” starring George MacKay.
Kahani knows Edinburgh well. His “Mortician” won last year’s Sean Connery Prize, and given his low budget, iPhone using ethos the winnings covered the costs of his latest.
Elsewhere, established names supply ballast: Gregg Araki’s “I Want Your Sex,” with Olivia Wilde, Daveed Diggs and Charli xcx; Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Sheep in the Box”; Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Her Private Hell”; and Tamra Davis’ music documentary “The Best Summer.”
Marc Turtletaub’s “Borges and Me,” meanwhile, world premieres with an especially apt Edinburgh connection, adapting Jay Parini’s memoir about travelling through the Scottish Highlands with short form literary titan Jorge Luis Borges.
£50,000 Talks
Edinburgh’s reboot has one particularly alluring calling card: cash.
Ten world-premiere features compete for the audience-voted £50,000 ($67,500) Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence, while the shorts competition offers the £15,000 Thelma Schoonmaker Prize.
In an independent sector where even experienced filmmakers struggle to finance their next project, these are hardly ornamental accolades. They make EIFF’s commitment to new talent tangible and give the festival a point of difference in a crowded festival calendar.
“Trainspotting” Comes Home
Yet the loudest event of the week may belong to a film made 30 years ago.
Danny Boyle’s “Trainspotting” returns Aug. 14 for an anniversary blowout at Leith Theatre, featuring live cast and crew commentary before the venue turns aptly into a club night. Irvine Welsh and former Underworld member Darren Emerson will DJ in tribute to the film’s era-defining soundtrack.
For Edinburgh, it is irresistible nostalgia: one of modern British cinema’s most culturally explosive films returning to the city it shone in a unique light.
Ewan McGregor, whose Renton propelled him to stardom, also appears separately for an EIFF In Conversation spanning “Trainspotting,” “Star Wars,” “Moulin Rouge!” and beyond.
Star Power
McGregor is part of a substantial talks program.
Kenneth Branagh receives the inaugural EIFF Outstanding Contribution to Cinema Award and discusses his career as actor and director. Veteran documentary filmmaker Ken Burns and Dern are also lined up for career conversations.
On the industry side, Killer Films’ Christine Vachon brings three decades of American indie experience stretching from “Kids” and “Boys Don’t Cry” to “Carol” and “Past Lives.”
There is an Edinburgh logic here. EIFF does not need to compete with larger festivals red-carpet tonnage. Its currency is access, significant filmmakers, smaller rooms, and in depth conversations.
U.K. Indie Check-Up
The most consequential addition may happen away from the screen.
On Aug. 15, EIFF stages its inaugural U.K. Film Conference at Central Hall, conceived as a “state of the nation” discussion for British independent cinema.
BFI CEO Ben Roberts opens in conversation with Picturehouse creative director Clare Binns. Other sessions tackle financing, low-budget filmmaking, adaptation and the increasingly urgent question of how filmmakers build careers beyond a debut feature.
Having spent two years rebuilding itself, Edinburgh now wants to become a place where the wider British indie sector can reckon with itself.
Variety Lounge Lands
This year, those conversations also gain a wider platform.
Variety and EIFF launch the first U.K. edition of the Variety Lounge, supported by VisitScotland. Already a fixture around festivals including Sundance and Toronto, the Edinburgh Lounge will feature filmed conversations with attending filmmakers and talent, hosted by our own Alex Ritman and distributed across Variety.com and EIFF channels.
Variety co-president and publisher Dea Lawrence said when announced in Variety, EIFF had “a demonstrated commitment to fast tracking new talent,” adding that the U.K.’s position as a global entertainment hub made the collaboration “a natural partnership with Variety.”
For Ridd, the Lounge offers EIFF a significant international amplifier, with its filmed interviews “sent out into the world” and VisitScotland helping put the festival, Edinburgh and Scotland on the global stage.
Three editions into its reboot, Edinburgh looks increasingly beyond its revamp. Stars and anniversaries will grab the headlines; the bigger test is how many of its 21 world premieres can turn an Edinburgh launch into momentum elsewhere.
