Another Colleen Hoover adaptation is coming to theaters as Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson bring the author’s best-selling novel “Verity” to life this weekend.
The Amazon MGM thriller has made $4.5 million in preview
at the box office. It’s on track to debut with $30 million to $35 million and land in the top spot on the charts, which would mark Hathaway’s third No. 1 movie after “The Odyssey” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”
Produced for $40 million, “Verity” should be another hit in the recent string of adaptations of Hoover’s novels, which include 2024’s “It Ends With Us,” 2025’s “Regretting You” and “Reminders of Him” from earlier this year. “It Ends With Us,” starring Blake Lively, is the biggest of the group with its $50 million opening and $350 million global haul. “Verity” should fall in second place and surpass “Reminders of Him,” which opened with $17 million, and “Regretting You,” which had $13.6 million.
Hathaway stars as the reclusive author Verity Crawford in the movie, who’s unable to finish her latest novel after an accident. She and her husband, played by Josh Hartnett, hire Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson) to finish Verity’s manuscript, but she gets tangled into a web of mystery and lies.
“Verity” should have no trouble dominating over this weekend’s fellow new release, Tom Cruise’s “Digger.” Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, “Digger” is expected to be one of this year’s biggest box office bombs. It’s made $1.2 million in previews and is projected to open with just $12 million to $15 million against a staggering $125 million budget (though it reportedly grew to over $160 million). Cruise stars as an oil tycoon who must save the planet from a climate catastrophe in this environmental thriller. Reviews haven’t been kind to the film, but Cruise and the “Digger” team have leaned into the bad pressand asked viewers to see the movie for themselves.
