InTension Industries is a new independent production company out of Provo, Utah, that is focused on indie and genre film fare. Founded by a quartet of seasoned Hollywood dealmakers, the company is looking to shake up
the industry by offering one lucky filmmaker a million dollars to film a feature based off their short, thanks to a new competition called “The Million-Dollar $hortcut.”
Per the press release, the competition “invites emerging filmmakers to submit genre shorts: thriller, horror, suspense and everything in between. InTension will produce and release the winner’s feature film for a budget of $1,000,000. The runners-up will have the opportunity to receive personalized feedback from InTension’s creative development team and participate in a development session with InTension’s industry veterans.”
Film fans will also be able to have a voice by being able to help pick the winning project by “voting for their favorite films during the first two rounds of the competition. From there, InTension will review the top-voted films alongside a hand-picked jury of established filmmakers.”
“John Carpenter taught us in 1978 that there’s no stronger expression of what film can do, nor fun you can have at the cinema, than a stripped-down exercise in tension and existential dread that pins you to your seat for 90 minutes — that’s the high we are chasing with our projects,” Bringham Taylor, a producer at InTension Industries, said in a statement.
The InTension team consists of Taylor, who formerly was a producer at Disney and worked on films such as “The Jungle Book” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise; Ian Puente, who has held several biz dev and strategy roles at companies such as Samuel Goldwyn Films, Sony Pictures and EPIX; Dave Hunter, a film producer and co-creator of “Nitro Circus”; and Tom Goddall, who has produced Disney fare such as “Christopher Robin” and “Lady and the Tramp,” as well as indie films.
InTension Industries recently premiered its first film, “Whiskey Throttle,” at the Provo-based FilmQuest. Next up in development is the sci-fi thriller “Sentinel,” starring Steve Zahn.
“The future of distribution is community. Audiences want more than something to watch; they want to connect,” Hunter also said in a statement. “This competition is about building a community around great storytelling.”
