What's Happening?
The Carbondale-based nonprofit VOICES, founded in 2016, is dedicated to amplifying diverse narratives through art. Executive and Artistic Director MinTze Wu discussed the organization's mission with Aspen Public Radio's Sarah Tory. VOICES provides platforms
for storytelling through various art forms, including mural projects and live performances. The nonprofit aims to break down stereotypes and foster genuine connections by allowing individuals to share their personal stories. Recent projects include the Queer Voices initiative, which brings performances to Glenwood Springs, and Nuestras Voces, a Spanish-speaking theater project. These efforts are part of VOICES' commitment to creating safe spaces for marginalized communities to express themselves.
Why It's Important?
VOICES' work is significant in promoting inclusivity and understanding within communities. By providing a platform for storytelling, the organization helps dismantle biases and encourages empathy among diverse groups. This approach is particularly important in today's social climate, where many individuals face discrimination based on identity. The nonprofit's initiatives not only empower participants but also educate audiences, fostering a more inclusive society. Additionally, VOICES' focus on safety and support, such as having immigration lawyers present at events, highlights the importance of creating secure environments for vulnerable populations to share their stories.
