Archaeologists have unearthed a Viking-era skull in Wandlebury, England, believed to be evidence of one of the world's oldest surgical procedures, trepanation. The skull, dating back to the 9th century AD, features a large oval hole, suggesting the individual
underwent surgery to relieve symptoms such as migraines or seizures. The discovery was made during a University of Cambridge training dig. The individual, estimated to be between 17 and 24 years old, was unusually tall for the period, possibly due to a pituitary gland tumor causing excess growth hormones.
