What's Happening?
Four U.S. Navy sailors were instrumental in the recovery of the Artemis II crew after their successful lunar flyby mission. The sailors, Lt. Cmdr. Jesse Wang, Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Laddy Aldridge, Chief Hospital Corpsman Vlad Link, and Hospital Corpsman 1st
Class Steve Kapala, were the first to open the Orion capsule upon its return to Earth. They conducted initial medical assessments and assisted the astronauts out of the capsule safely. The Artemis II crew, which included the first woman and first person of color to travel to deep space, returned to Earth after a 10-day mission that tested life support systems and spacecraft capabilities.
